LYNN BOATNER

Lynn Boatner was born into a Navy family in San Diego and has traveled around the world experiencing many foreign cultures and peoples. From early childhood, Lynn composed music and lyrics, playing the piano. In high school she learned guitar and other stringed instruments, all the while continuing to compose and perform music. In 1968 she joined "Up With People", writing and performing while traveling the Eastern half of the United States with the group.
Over the years, Lynn has written many poems, but had never thought to do anything with them until she joined the Kern River Valley Poets and Writers Club. She finds the creative atmosphere and supportive members conducive to venturing into other areas of writing.

THE GULLS

I've always loved sea gulls.
Beautiful white and gray winged creatures
Aloft above the beach and blue ocean.
Scavengers, true, but look to their redeeming features.
Sea gulls mean land is near.
They keep the beaches clean, the food debris clear.

So when I moved from my Pacific ocean
To Lake Isabella on the Kern
I sadly left them behind.
What a grand discovery to learn,
There were gulls of the lake flying free
Or bobbing at rest on this their lake sea.

Lake gulls are smaller than their ocean cousins,
But just as graceful and very busy
Patrolling the waters and shores for tidbits and fish.
Their soaring and diving makes me dizzy
And I delight in knowing I am at home
On the lake shore in the gull flight zone.
