Co B. 2nd Fla Calvary
"The St. Johns Rangers"
Florida Flag adopted September 13,1861
The Company started off as an independent Cavalry under the command of Capt Benjamin Hopkins.. with Winston Stephens as Lt. Ben Hopkins died of fever Feb 2 ,1862 and Winston would be come Capt over the Company. They became known as " Captain Stephens' Independent Cavalry" until December  of 1862 when by special orders they formed the Co B 2nd Fla Cav.

On March 1, 1864, shortly after  the Battle of Olustee,  Capt Winston J.T. Stephens was hit by enemy fire near Cedar Creek  where  he died.. Henry A. Gray would become the Companies third and last Captain. In 1865 the Confederacy would stack their arms and surrender with most of the Company being paroled in Waldo Florida during the Month of May..

I have found in one Colonel's report ( Colonel Carraway Smith ,who commanded the Cavalry Brigade at Olustee ) where he states that the Companies of Captain Stephens and other Captains of the 2nd Fl Cav. was highly satisfactory and they acted with the coolness and deliberation of Veterans.

I have put alot of work into all of my research and am constantly changing things and adding more  information so check back often for Changes.. If you find a mistake somewhere let me know.. Most of my information comes form family members and pension records of each soldier.

I myself have 5 ancestors who fought for the Company and am very proud to be able to share all this information with you.
