Samsons pound
Waukesha Tech
Published Monday,
December 20, 2004 2:36:50 PM Central Time By LARRY HOLCOMBE Globe Sports Editor IRONWOOD -- Gogebic Community College sophomore John Lane scored 39 points and freshman point guard Robert Wood was named Most Valuable Player of the McDonald's Shootout as the Samsons won 99-78 over Waukesha Tech Saturday. GCC coach Deke Routheaux liked his team's play as the Samsons went 2-0 in the Shoot-Out. "Robert Wood is just a pure point guard. He controls the tempo. When we want to slow it down, he slows it down. And when we want the tempo going, he does that for us. He's also an excellent defender. "Everybody played well for two days. We had our best game of the season (Friday) night against Madison Tech, and played well for three quarters of this game," said Routheaux. "We had good team play, with eight guys playing a lot. With eight freshmen, going 10-3 is one of our better starts in recent years." The Samsons came out of the gate fast. Lane and Wood scored 11 of GCC's first 13 points, building a 13-2 lead. Waukesha Tech didn't let the game slip away, and responded with a 15-3 run to take a 17-16 lead with 12:45 remaining. Matt Hagen came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer for Gogebic. Wood followed with a trey and Lane added two more, beginning a 21-4 run over the middle of the quarter. GCC led 49-31 at half. The Samsons' lead grew to as many as 23 early in the second half before Waukesha Tech made the first of two small runs. Erik Bullock and Dan Sturtz scored seven straight and Waukesha was within 64-49 with 12:20 left. The Samsons found second-semester newcomer freshman Justin Nelson for four points inside and Lane added four more points for a 72-49 lead. Waukesha Tech crept back within 11 with six minutes left, but Samsons had one more 9-0 burst, including two assists from Wood and five quick points from Lane. "When we needed a run, we were able to get it," said Routheaux. GCC outrebounded Waukesha Tech 51-44. Lane led the Samsons with 13 boards. Along with Wood (13 points), Lane and sophomore Marco Gotta (nine points, eight rebounds), from Hurley, were also named to the all-tournament team, along with Waukesha's Bullock and Sturtz. The Samsons don't play again until Jan. 7-8 at the Itasca Community College tournament in Grand Rapids, Minn.
