WATERSMEET -- Gogebic Community College sophomore John Lane reached a 1,000 points faster than any Samson in history Saturday as GCC rolled over the University of Wisconsin-Marinette 110-67 at Nimrod Nation.

Lane scored 24 points in the first 10 minutes to reach the 1,000-point career mark. "John is a scoring machine," said Samson coach Deke Routheaux. "He's averaged over 28 points a game to reach 1,000 points in just 35 games."

The 6-6 forward, who finished Saturday's game with 33 points in 22 minutes, led the nation's junior colleges in scoring last season. College president Donald Foster presented him with the game ball at halftime.

Lane is one of six Samsons to reach 1,000 points, including GCC all-time leading scorer Jeff Podgornik (1,162), Shane Peterson, Preacher Owens, Robert Gloss and Bob Rannello.

Routheaux was happy with the Samsons' effort against the Buccaneers.

"We came out with a full-court press and built a 20-4 lead. The result was not really in doubt after that," said Routheaux. "Everybody shared the ball. That would be good to see in a game where the score was one-sided like that. Everyboyd played hard. We had seven guys between seven and 33 points."

Freshman guard Brandon Kelly scored 20 points for the Samsons.

Routheaux thanked the Watersmeet School officials for hosting the game.

GCC (7-3) hosts Itasca Community College Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Lady Samsons (4-4) will play Itasca CC at 5:30.
