NBBC women 70, GCC 67

After early foul trouble, the Gogebic Community College Lady Samsons bounced back in the second half, but fell to Northland Baptist Bible College 70-67.

When Kristen Ruppe had to sit with three early fouls, GCC couldn't cope with the tall front line of NBBC.

Northland raced to a 30-23 halftime lead, but the Lady Samsons had a good second half and led by nine points with eight minutes remaining.

GCC led by a point with 30 sconds to go when Ruppe blocked a shot, but slipped out of bounds on a wet spot.

NBBC then hit a field goal inside and added two late free throws to seal it.

Coach Dennis Mackey said Nichole Mazurek played all 40 minutes and scored 22 points, while Carly Levra came off the bench and scored 12 points, with 10 rebounds. "She's our fastest player and had a great all-around game," Mackey said. "Janey Routheaux had a good game at the point and added 12 points on four 3-pointers."

The Lady Samsons, 3-3, play Saturday in the Lindquist Classic at 5:30 against Vermilion CC.
