HISTORY MAKERS:
First starting out being known as Mookie Baylock, the band did it's first performance in 1990 as a warm-up for Alice in Chains at a club in Seattle. The crowd didn?t respond well to the bands style of playing. The only luck Mookie Baylock got was that an old friend of Jeff and Stone?s asked them to be on a sound track to a movie he was making, called Singles. The result of Mookie Baylock's work were the two songs called State of Love and Trust and Breathe, but by the time the sound track came out in 1991, the two songs were titled by Pearl Jam, because the band had used the period of waiting to come up with a new name. The name Pearl Jam had been decided on an old rumor that Eddie's brothers used to tell. Eddie's aunt, Pearl, supposedly knew how to make a hallucinogenic jam, which his brother's called "Pearl?s jam". This of course was just a fairy tale but it did result in giving the band the name Pearl Jam.
Soon after, in late 1991, the band released their first album, Ten, which immediately got them noticed. Dave Krusen couldn't take the sudden heat, and he left the band as they were preparing to leave on their first tour. A drummer was drastically needed so Matt Chamberlain was found as a temporary replacement. The first single released from the album was the song Jeremy. Within one week of it?s release it climbed to number one on the charts, and soon after the singles Alive, Even Flow and Oceans made it into top 10 as well. Jeremy was the most stunning song of all though. Eddie revealed in one of his interviews with MTV that he wrote the song about a boy by the name of Jeremy Wade Delle who shot himself in front of his class, using his dad's hunting rifle. |

After the Ten tour Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and Jeff Ament found themselves without a drummer once again. Matt Chamberlain had only been temporary and he went to pursue a career as the drummer in the Saturday Night Live band. But Matt didn't leave them empty handed, he instead introduced them to his friend Dave Abbruzzese, who had just stopped playing drums for the Texas band Dr. Tongue. Dave Abbruzzese soon joined Pearl Jam and played with the band on the albums, Vs. and Vitalogy. Even though they couldn?t be compared to the major successful album Ten both of them included a few number one hits.
Pearl Jam has always played an inspirational type music, with many messages woven into there songs. That is what makes them so unique in the world of grunge rock. Expressed in their own words, their goal is to influence their fans in a positive way. During the recent years Pearl Jam has continued releasing one great album after another. With No Code in 1996 and Yield in 1998 they are surely living up to their full potential.
