1979 ***** 121 mins.
This is a wonderful screen adaptation of the original 1968 Broadway play. Whereas the play was, simply, a bunch of hippies getting high, going to be-ins, and having sex, this film actually has more of a story. Claude Hooper Bukowski (John Savage) has come to New York City from Oklahoma for a date with the Army Induction Board. Before he gets there, though, he runs into a bunch of hippies in Central Park. He falls in love with a rich girl named Shelia (Beverly D'Angelo). The ending is moving and unforgettable.
