2000 ***** 90 mins.
Is it impossible to make a sequel that's just as good as the first? No. Joe Berlinger proved it with this sequel to the 1999 cult hit The Blair Witch Project. This film is just as creepy and creative. The viewer never knows what to expect or believe. To quote the production notes by Joe Berlinger in the DVD booklet: "There is a line in the campfire scene when Jeff says, 'Film lies, Kim. Video tells the truth,' which is a clue to the audience to pay attention to the medium in which scenes are shot. Because, ultimately, it is possible to conclude that all the 35mm sequences have been subjective delusions of the five characters whose obsession with a media-generated event called The Blair Witch Project has led them into a state of mass hysteria - that what really occurred over the course of the weekend is what takes place on video. Or is it just the opposite?" Nothing is completely declared as true or false, which is the beauty of this film. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 is, truly, a filmmaking wonder. It should never be forgotten.
Rated R for violence, language, sexuality, and drug use.
