- Goodwrench 400 (February 22, 1998)
- QUALIFYING: Rick Mast won the Bud Pole for the Goodwrench 400 with a speed of 156.361mph and a time of 00:23.415sec. Rusty Wallace started 7th with a speed of 155.221mph and a time of 00:23.587sec. Dale Earnhardt and Ernie Irvan started 37th and 40th with provisionals. Top Ten Qualifiers: 1st-Rick Mast, 2nd-Kenny Wallace, 3rd-David Green, 4th-Jeff Gordon, 5th-Jeremy Matfield, 6th-Mark Martin, 7th-Rusty Wallace, 8th-Johnny Benson, 9th-John Andretti, 10th-Hut Stricklin. RACE: I'm so glad that the season has finally started again, and it's already the second race! All of the cautions involved someone hitting the wall. In the early beginnings of the race, Gordon dropped off drasticly. He fell to 31st position because his car was tight and then loose. Rusty also started to fall back but not as badly as Gordon, Rusty was able to adjust his car and continue up front all day. About halfway, Gordon's crew was able to get his car just right. He charged back up to the front and took the lead. He continued up front and went on to win his first race of the 1998 season. Top Ten Finishers: 1st-Jeff Gordon, 2nd-Rusty Wallace, 3rd-Mark Martin, 4th-Jimmy Spencer, 5th-Geoff Bodine, 6th-Bill Elliott, 7th-Dale Jarrett, 8th-Terry Labonte, 9th-Bobby Hamilton, 10th-Ricky Craven. Notables in the field: 14th-Jeremy Mayfield, 17th-Dale Earnhardt, 19th-Ernie Irvan, 34th-Michael Waltrip.
