DAY 18

WHATS ON: Today the students will have finished reading the novel.  The objective of today is to have students understand some of the themes of the novel.  To tie this unit together, the students will be asked to re-analyze the quote that they looked at on DAY 1.  This is meant to have students realize how the meaning of the quote has evolved through an understanding of the story.

WHAT TO DO:  When the students walk into the classroom, the desks will be set up in a circle and the quote, "As he walked, he realized, the only way out of this life was Redemption (Page 189).  Students will be asked to write a reaction to this quote, with an emphasis on how it pertains to the plot and themes of the novel.  Also, students are to comment on how their understanding of the quote changed from day 1 until now.  The students will be given 10 minutes to write this reflection.
When the reflections are handed in, the students will be asked to participate in a Socratic seminar in which the following questions will be asked:

-Was Elvis redeemed from his life in Lagos?
-Who is Redemption in this story?

The seminar will take up he remainder of the class so that students will have the opportunity to bounce ideas off one another to gain a better understanding of the story.
