DAY 17 WHATS ON: Today the teacher will be reading chapter 27 and 28 aloud. The torture scene is in this segment of the book, and this will be addressed during class time. There will be a discussion of this gruesome scene, and the students will be asked to pay attention to the language of the segment-how the author is able to describe the pain felt by Elvis. This requires close reading and identification of figurative language in the chapters. WHAT TO DO: When the students walk into the room, they will be asked to turn to page chapter 27. Students will be asked to underline phrases that help to convey feeling in this passage. The teacher will read chapter 27 and 28 aloud to the students. As they listen, they are paying attention to the language used in order to effectively desribe the torture scene in the book. When the reading is finished, the students will be asked to comment to the class how the chapters made them feel and what particular phrases struck them and why. Students will be called on to share this information. When this discussion is finished, the students are asked to write a description of a painful event, using as much figurative language and description as possible. This could be painful in the way of emotional or physical pain, and anything could be desribed, as long as it is appropriate for class. This should be 1-2 written pages. When the students finish their writing, they will be asked to trade papers with another student. The students will be asked to write a note to their peers at the bottom of the paper, reacting to how effective the descriptions were and how the passage made them feel. This work will be handed in at the end of class. ASSIGNMENT: Finish the novel. |
