-- Original Composition
                                          Peggy Welty - Guitarist
(by Michael Blake - Dayton Musician's Press)

So...you want relaxing guitar music - with a little bit of an edge?

Ms. Welty began playing guitar at the age of 5.

Thirty-one years later, Ms. Welty has made a name for herself locally and abroad as a premiere fingerstyle guitarist, schooled in the eclectic as well as the old school.

Ms. Welty's background is in classical music.  She started out like many students do, playing "the classics".  Ms. Welty's repertoire now spans from J.S. Bach to Led Zeppelin and everything in between.  Peggy will play anything she likes - so be prepared (the list is endless and definitely eclectic)!
((See the  Q&A below))

At the age of 16, Ms. Welty taught adult night school guitar classes.  At the age of 18, before graduation from high school, Ms. Welty enjoyed playing guitar at the Grand Old Opry.

Ms. Welty is a former student of Bowling Green State University College of Musical Arts.  Her (former) major was Guitar Performance and Education, with a Jazz Emphasis minor.

Ms. Welty's first CD was released in 2000.  The response has been overwhelmingly postive and as a result, she hopes to release her second CD in October 2005.   Ms. Welty's first CD has sold locally as well as abroad - Ireland and Australia currently.

"Being a single mom unfortunately does not give me alot of time to tend to my composing and recording, but now that my son is old enough, I am teaching him how to play too, so it's a family thing."  she says.

Ms. Welty is truly grateful to her fans who have supported her music from her earlier days.

She adds, "I cannot say how moved I am when someone I don't know comes up to me on the street and tells me how much they love my music.  What a tremendous joy!"

Ms. Welty's new CD, tentatively scheduled for release in October 2005, branches out in new areas, while keeping with her own unique style of guitar artistry.  You'll hear more of Peggy singing on this one, with some surprises thrown in for good measure!

Ms. Welty has recently taken up playing Celtic Harp.

"I guess six strings weren't enough for me - I needed 30 more." She laughs.  "I truly enjoy the instrument and the new challenge.   Guitar will always be my home, but what can I say?  I'm hooked!"

Ms. Welty composes instrumental pieces as well.  A proud mother, Ms. Welty's first released composition, called "Squirmy's Tune" was written for her son, James, who is now seven years old.

"I was six months pregnant with him at the time I composed that.  He's changed my life."

Her current composition was written for none other than Ed Roland, of Collective Soul.

"I wanted him to know how much his lyrics and the music of Collective Soul have inspired me," Ms. Welty said.

Ms. Welty boasts a collection of Alvarez guitars, including her classical/electric cutaway and Stratocaster copy, and currently her new acoustic.

"I've played a LOT of guitars in my time, and I can tell you hands down, I have never played a bad Alvarez.  You can't say that about every brand!"

Ms. Welty uses a Zoom MRS-1044 Multitracking Recording Board,  Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 Software, and Compaq computers.  Her celtic harp is a Thormahlen Cygnet model, made of lacewood.

you're supposed to  answer:
"Yes, Peggy.  I think you're quite lovely."
see?  you didn't know there was gonna be a pop quiz, did you?
                                                Q&A

Do you have questions?  if so, please email them.  you might see your response posted here.

Q:  What are some of your favorite pieces and songs to play?
A:   I love Scott Joplin, so anything usually by him.  Also, of course, Collective Soul, Beatles, Paul Simon.  One of my current favorites is
"Joshua Is With Me Now" by Nelson.  Also, "April Breeze" by Jay Steele.  I do a solo acoustic version of "Satellite" by Collective Soul that I like.  Of course, no matter how complicated my life gets, I love to sit down and play "Romanza".  That was the first classical piece I ever learned (when I was about 8).  My father always loved it.  The last piece I ever played for my mother was Bach's "Prelude to the First Cello Suite", so I love that, for that reason.  I love Beethoven, so the Pathetique and Moonlight Sonata(s), I love.

Q.  What is the hardest piece you ever had to learn?
A.  Oh boy - that's a tough question - I did a rendition once of Stevie Wonder's
"Overjoyed" where the bottom string was tuned down to E flat.  That was  a challange!  Makes my left hand hurt just thinking about it...  lol

Q.  What is the easiest piece you ever learned?
A.
Venezuelan Waltz.  Learned that in 14 hours.  If you have ever listened to that piece, you should realize it's NOT an easy piece.  Yeah.  I'm quite proud of myself -- it's occassional, but it happens.  LOL

Q.  What is the first song you play on every new instrument you acquire?
A.
"Hey Jude".  Always.  :)  Then "Ode to Joy".  Then "December".

Q.  Did you ever think about quitting guitar?
A.  Sure!  Several times.  I have hit several musical plateaus throughout the years.  First time I wanted to quit, when I was about 14.  I think if you stick with something long enough, eventually you are going to run into that sort of thing.  Don't give up, though!  For me personally, I just can't give it up.  I've been playing since I was 5 years old.  I wouldn't know what else to do with myself.  lol

Q.  Tell us something interesting about yourself.
A.   I play mostly with my eyes closed.  Started out to be a stage fright thing -- it still is sometimes -- but then I wanted to see if I could really do it, just as a challenge.   Let's see, what else? - well, I don't like my name.  I'd like to change it.

Q.  That's interesting.  What would you change your name to?
A.  Tuesday.  My parents were originally going to name me Tuesday.
