Overindulgence or Disorder?

Overeating is common. Everyone does it from time to time, but about 2 million americans overeat on a regular basis and feel they have no control over it. These people have binge eating disorder. They eat for emotional reasons and stuff themselves even though they aren't physically hungry. People with this disorder find it impossible to stick with a strict diet and the feeling of failure often causes them to increase their binging. Hiding their binges out of shame forces some of them into isolation and they in turn, eat even more.

Damages of this disorder are varied. Although people who binge don't have the risks that come with the self induced vomiting that bulimic suffer, there are still many health risks. Binge eaters may have obesity, higher cholesterol, high blood pressure and a greater risk for diabetes.

Causes for binge eating disorder aren't known. Researchers have found that about half of Americans suffering with this condition also have a history of depression. Scientists are studying the way brain chemicals may affect binge eating.

Weight loss is needed for most binge eaters, but experts advice against taking on any weight loss plan. Instead they recommend binge eaters seek treatment to help them change the thought patterns that influence them to overeat. There are also medications, such as antidepressants, that may help them increase their food intake.

Binge eating disorder can be controlled. As most other eating disorders, some type of psychotherapy is extremely helpful. If you feel you may have this disorder discuss it with your doctor.
