Creatures of the Magical World

As Harry learns early in his magical career, there are many strange creatures that populate the magical world that you would never see in the Muggle world. Some are dangerous, some are cute, some are just plain weird, and Harry and his fellow Hogwarts classmates learn about them all. Here are most of them that have been mentioned in the books so far. They may be helpful if you're surfing my site.

CreatureAppearanceMost Prominent Behavioral Features
Basilisk Very large and long serpent The basilisk has a deadly stare as well as deadly poison that works almost instantly once injected into the human body. Spiders flee it, and the crow of the rooster is fatal to it.
Blast-ended Skrewt When fully grown, they can be up to 10 ft long and develop a hard, armor-like shell on their backs. Blast-ended Skrewts have the ability to sting, burn, bite, and draw blood. They propel themselves foward by blasting one of their ends.
Boggart Formless until it meets up with someone. The boggart changes into a person's greatest and deepest fear.
Chinese Fireball Bright red with a gold fringe of spikes around it's face. Like all dragons, the Chinese Fireball breathes fire and is very deadly.
Common Welsh Green Smooth-scaled and green. Like all dragons, the Common Welsh Green breathes fire and is very deadly.
Dementor A tall, scabby creature with a gaping hole where the mouth should be as its only facial feature. Dementors feed on people's feelings. They can suck happiness from a room and replace it with a helpless gloom by drawing a single, rattling breath, and they have the ability to suck people's souls from their bodies.
Flobberworm Large, boring, greenish lumps. Flobberworms merely exsist. They are very boring and so far, there is no known use or purpose for them.
Giant Fully grown, giants are about 20 ft tall and look very rugged. Giants have a bad reputation among wizards because of their natural urge to savage people.
Gnome About a foot high with a knobbly, potato-like head. Gnomes inhabit gardens and are generally disliked by wizards.
Goblin Short creatures with a big head with pointy ears, and quite unattractive. Goblins are very witty and no-nonsense.
Grindylow Sickly green in color with long but brittle fingers and short, pointy, sharp horns. Grindylows are also known as water demons because of their habit of pulling waders under the water.
Hippogriff Half lion and half eagle in appearance. Hippogriffs are very haughty and proud creatures. Their trust must be earned by standing straight and unblinking, then bowing. If the hippogriff bows back, it is safe to approach, but if not, it is not safe.
Hungarian Horntail Very lizard-like in appearance, Horntails are large, scaley, and black. Like all dragons, the Hungarian Horntail breathes fire and is very deadly.
Kappa Looks much like a scaley monkey. Habitually tries to strangle unwitting marsh waders.
Manticore A Big, fat, hairy monster with long, sharp claws and teeth. The manticore is a savage that feeds on human flesh.
Niffler Fluffy and black in appearance with flat front paws. Nifflers love shiny things, which makes them ideal for hunting for treasure.
Pheonix The pheonix is covered in brilliant red and gold plumage. The pheonix is famous for its healing tears and unearthly melody. It is virtually immortal because it dies by bursting into flame and then is reborn from the ashes.
Pixie Electric blue and tiny, with a high-pitched voice that is undecipherable to the human ear. Pixies love to wreak havoc wherever they go.
Red Cap Very goblin-like in looks. Red Caps can be found lurking wherever blood has been shed.
Sphinx Has the body of a lion and the head of a woman. Sphinxes are often used as guardians because of their ability to tell difficult riddles.
Swedish Short-Snout Smooth-scaled and green in color. Like all dragons, the Swedish Short-Snout breathes fire and is very deadly.
Troll Big and lumbering with a small head and large body. Trolls are dumb and naturally murderous creatures.
Werewolf Looks much like a classic wolf. Werewolves look like normal humans most of the time, but when there is a full moon out, they transform into murderous wolves.
