Harry Potter Vocabulary


For those poor, deprived souls who have not yet read any of the Harry Potter series, here is some vocabulary from the books that will be helpful to know when looking through my site.

Word or ExpressionMeaning
Auror A wizard whose job is to hunt down dark wizards
Azkaban The dreaded wizard prison located on an island guarded by dementors
Chamber of Secrets A legendary secret chamber supposedly built by Salazar Slytherin, head of the Slytherin house. The legend stated that only the heir of Slytherin could open it and unleash its horrors.
Death Eater A follower of Lord Voldemort, the most powerful dark wizard of the century.
Dementor A souless creature that guards Azkaban. They feed on the souls of humans and have the ability to suck the happiness out of a room by drawing a single breath.
Diagon Alley A muggle-free alley filled with shops full of wizarding goods. This is where Hogwarts students get most of their school supplies.
Galleon A form of wizard currency made out of gold, worth seventeen sickles.
Goblet of Fire A large wooden goblet that chose the champions for the Triwizard Tournament. It chose only the most ready and able champions from each school and once it chose, there was a binding contract between the student and the goblet that could not be broken. The student, once picked, had to compete.
Gringotts The wizarding bank, run by goblins.
Head boy/girl The boy and girl chosen in their 7th and final year at Hogwarts to be the leader and role model of the school body.
Hogsmeade A historical muggle-free community that has many wizarding shops. Third year Hogwarts students are allowed to visit with a permission slip.
Hogwarts The school for young witches and wizards. It is built as a castle and educates its students in magic for seven years, from age 11 to 17.
Hogwarts Express The train that transports Hogwarts students to the school.
House elf A three-foot-high creature often enslaved to a wizarding family. They have a such a binding contract to their masters that they are not allowed to even speak ill of their masters without being severely punished, whether it be by their masters or themselves.A three-foot-high creature often enslaved to a wizarding family. Knut A form of wizarding currency made out of bronze, the lowest value.
Mirror of Erised A mirror that shows the onlooker their deepest desire, but does not show reality nor truth.
Mudblood A foul name for someone born into a a muggle family that has magical powers.
Muggle The magical community's name for people with no magical powers.
Omen A sign that is supposed to foretell the future.
Parselmouth A name for someone who has the ability to talk to snakes.
Prefect An honorable position for those students who are being considered as a potential Head Boy or Head Girl.
Pureblood A wizarding name for a family that can be traced back for generations as all wizards.
Quidditch The most popular sport in the wizarding world played on broomsticks. There are four balls; the red Quaffle, which three Chasers try to score points with, trying to get it past the Keeper, two black Bludgers, which race around trying to knock people off their brooms and are beat away by two Beaters, and the tiny gold Snitch, which travels at very high speeds and is persued by the Seeker, and if cought ends the game and earns the Seeker's team 150 points.
Quidditch World Cup The international championship game played by the two top teams in the world.
Shrieking Shack An old house in Hogsmeade thought to be haunted because of the unearthly screams and wails that used to be heard coming from it at night.
Sickle A form of wizarding currency made out of silver, worth 29 knuts.
Sorcerer's Stone A ruby-red stone that contains an elixer that if drunk, can get the drinker eternal life and unlimited wealth.
Squib The opposite of a Mudblood, a name for someone born into a wizarding family with no magical powers whatsoever.
Triwizard Tournament A tournament in which one champion from each of three wizarding schools compete in a series of tasks throughout the year.
