She knelt beside her window
And wished upon a star
It seemed so bright and vivid
For being so very far
She closed her eyes to concentrate
And stayed there for awhile
Until the corners of her mouth turned up
To form a teeny smile
She said her prayers, turned off her light
And then climbed into bed
And as she drifted off, his smile
Danced about her head
The next day when se saw him
She ran to him with pride
She threw her arms about him
And "I love you, dear" she cried
He smiled down upon her
And said "I love you, too"
She grinned back then for that was
The sweetest thing that he could do
She couldn't help but beam for joy
Her heart felt near-elated
It seemed that nothing could deplete
The feeling those four words created
However, in te midst of all
Her joy and celebration
She heard those same four words
But felt a much different sensation
"I love you, dear" "I love you, too"
She slowly turned herself
And soon was facing her true love
His arms 'round someone else
Her eyes teared up, face clouded over
She wrenched her gaze away
The day was bright and sunny
But the skies of her soul were grey
She ambled home, drawn in, morose
Willing herself not to cry
But when the darkness hid her from the world
A tear leaked from her eye
He still told her he loved her
The lies hurt, but greater still
Was the fact that sge still wished for him
Upon her windowsill
She knew she must forget him
She saw the trust he lacked
She tried but always knew
That she would still welcome him back
Growing weaker everyday
From all the lies she let him feed her
Until she had to lean on him
Though she knew he would never need her
At last she fell away
Hit the pavement, broken, bleeding
Nightmares of trying to make him love her
Never quite succeeding
A diet of resentment
Brought her back up on her feet
Without his shoulder to lean on
She thought she was complete
But soon enough she saw him
He appeared so very often
Her love slowly returned to her
Her hardened heart was softened
The though of him brought tears
To her eyes that now shone bright
And despite defensive caution
She dreamed of him every night
Will gave way to want
And feeling flooded from within
Until she saw that loving him
And trying not to was a sin
So she knelt beside her window
And found the perfect star
That, like her love, seemed too bright and vivid
To be so very far
