Music

The music that flowed from the Baroque period is one of its most prominent characteristics.   Some of the music and information on composers can be found here.   Experience at the Baroque Festival the sounds of:

Bach

Vivaldi

Although officially ordained as a priest, Vivaldi begged pardon from this job on account of physical discomfort, and rumor has it that he would sometimes duck out of the altar to quickly jot down a musical score. His works span from the mastery of the famous Four Seasons to five-finger exercises for the novice student. Click on the below links to sample some of Vivaldi's music.

  1. Two Cellos
  2. Bassoon Concerto
  3. Concerto Op3/10

Albinoni

Although he began his musical career in singing and on the violin, and later turned to music composition, Albinoni's true fascination lay in the oboe, and he wrote pieces for all of these instruments. Click on the below links to sample some of Albinoni's music.

  1. Albinoni Oboe Concerto
  2. Pasquini - Bergamasca
  3. Geminiani - Andantino

Scarlatti

Scarlatti wasted no time in being recognized for his musical genius -- by the age of 16, he had become a musician at the royal chapel in Rome. He is known primarily for his harpsichord pieces. Click on the below links to sample some of Scarlatti's music.

Corelli

Both a celebrated composer and violinist, Corelli enjoyed his work so much he wouldn't even let some of his most famous pieces be published within his lifetime. He was especially noted for his tone quality, and was the first person to organize the basics of violin technique.

Handel

Handel's father had him set up for a career in the law; Handel, however, had music as his chosen path from a very young age, evident especially at the age of 18 when he took a job as a violinist at the Hamburg Opera, where his first two operas were composed. One of the few artists to be recognized in their time, Handel was called on repeatedly by royalty and nobility to compose musical masterpieces. Click on the below links to sample some of Handel's music.
