| May 9, 2004 Yesterday, I began by weeding the area around the blueberries, which is always prone to getting overrun with weeds. I also fertilized the blueberries; they seem to be growing some now, so this is a good sign. I still wonder if they aren't cross-pollinating because they are two different varieties (the only season they produced fruit was the season mom purchased them for us). I also replanted a hosta, which was looking sad--I think because it was getting too much sun. I also had to stake some iris. I think the rain had something to do with their falling down, but I also noticed that (so far) only iris that obviously need dividing are falling. In the front yard, I removed a poor, struggling fern from one of the pots Grammy gave us when we were first married; it's now beneath the lilac; I had a hard time getting much in the way of roots (ivy was overtaking it), so we'll see if it survives. I also dug up the old lavender, and chopped it up, cutting out the old, woody parts and keeping the young-looking parts. I replanted the young parts with a little Miracle Grow Potting Mixture; we'll see if they die or thrive. I also planted my new lavender plants, as well as the alyssum, Blanket Flower, and Helensflower (all with some Miracle Grow Potting Mixture). Some of the darkest alyssum was looking a bit peaked, and the Blanket flower had a drooping blossom. Today, the Blanket Flower looks recovered. I also weeded the front bed, and noticed that some "spit wads" were invading one of my mums. I hit them good with cold water. Today, I thinned out the lettuce. May 10, 2004 Having decided the zinnias were not going to come up, I weeded the side bed today, just by hoeing mostly. I cut back the brown daffodil leaves in this side bed, too. (I think they browned before everything else because I transplanted them after the blooms were gone.) I also put epsom salts around the pink and red roses, and placed some more cornmeal around the pink rose, which is the only one still showing signs of blackspot. The pink rose has a full bloom on it now, and the red/white rose is just gorgeous this year. The Blanket Flower has one bloom. The white bleeding heart is starting to really bloom now, too. |
