Oct. 25 Hong Kong to Guangzhou by train
Only 100 miles from Hong Kong and a centerpiece of China's economic reform policy, Guangzhou is the hub of Guangdong province -one of the fastest growing commercial areas in the world.  It was the only part open to Western commerce from 1759 to 1842 and played a key role in the first Opium War (1840-42) between Britain and China.  We will visit Mao Zedong's Peasant Movement Institute and see some impacts of modernization of Chinese urban life.

Oct. 25-28 in GUILIN
Founded in 214 B.C., Guilin is nestled in the midst of spectacular cone karst (limestone) formations.  We will enjoy a 50-mile boat trip on the Li River as it flows past the mountains and terraced agricultural fields which have inspired painters and poets for centuries.  We will visit a southern Ming imperial tomb and a traditional Chinese cemetery.  Staying at the Li Jiang Hotel in a centrally located park-like setting near the Li River, we will have good opportunities for hiking to city sites and for biking in the countryside.

Oct. 28/29 Guilin to Wuhan on Trains 324 (11:00 p.m. - 1:56 p.m. next day)
Oct. 29-Nov. 3 in WUHAN
This capital of Hubei Province, situated at the confluence of the Han and Yangzi Rivers, Wuhan is a large industrial city with some important sites in 20th century Chinese history.  We will visit the Wuhan Performing Arts School. the huge Wuhan Iron and Steel Works which employs 120,000 people, Hua Shan township village, and the Hubei Traditional Chinese Medicine College.  Also, we will hear a guest lecture at Huazhong Normal University, with which Augustana has an exchange agreement, and have time for informal conversations with Chinese students.  We will stay at the Changhai Hotel overlooking the Yangzi River.
