Short Summary
The House on Mango Street is written in a series of vignettes, or mini stories, covering a year in the life of Esperanza. Esperanza and her family move to Mango street, a crowded Latino neighborhood in a povertous part of Chicago. Her new house is better than their previous apartment, although Esperanza is still ashamed of their living conditions. She resolves to someday leave and have a house of her own.
Sexually, Esperanza grows and gains wisdom from watching the adults and children interacting around her. Writing becomes a way of expressing herself through her first crush, growing hips, making friends and enduring sexual assault. The novel also includes the stories of many of Esperanza’s neighbors, giving a full picture of the world surrounding her. The stories of her neighbors are important because of how they influence her learning and discovering.
