Their Eyes were Watching God

Style and Narrative Structure

At the time this novel was written, her style of writing was considered nothing short of blasphemous. The phonetics of the language was incorporated into the novel in an attempt to make the language more genuine and real to the environment.  However, Ms. Hurston stood strong and continued writing in the vernacular much like Mark Twain and Joel Chandler. There are roughly even amounts of description and dialog, and stream of consciousness is used as well. The novel is mostly written in third person.
