The two most common methods of divination are using tarot cards or runes. But there are numerous other tools one can use, such as dice, or coins. You can use the natural things around you such as fire and water as well.
Divination is a skill that takes a lot of practice to become good at. However, it will not be a skill that you can perfect. When you practice divination you interpret the tarot cards or runes or such. These interpretations are always open to misinterpretation, or error. But the more you practice, the less this will happen.
It is not absolutely necessary to use divination. Some Wiccans use it to determine if their spells will work or if they even need to do any spell work. I feel these questions can usually be answered without divination.
One important thing to remember about divination is that the future is not set in stone. The future is truly shaped by our decisions. Any outcome predicted by your readings can be changed. For example, if a reading implies that you will win money in the lottery, and you do not buy a ticket, you obviously have changed your future by your decisions. If you choose to do readings for other people, be sure to tell them this.
To get started working on your skills of divination you must first choose one of the numerous methods. Since runes and tarot are the most common, you will probably be choosing one of these. Don't just use the one that you can get your hands on the fastest. Take some time to learn about both tarot and runes. Find out what makes them differ. Then pick the one that appeals to you the most.
Now you must choose what deck of tarot cards or set of runes to use. I've heard it said that you shouldn't buy a deck of tarot cards, you should receive them as a gift. I do not think that is necessary. If someone gives you a deck, that is great. But it may not be the deck that would work best for you. Don't be afraid to spend money to get the deck of cards or set of runes that really pulls you to it. There are so many different sets out there of tarot and runes that it can become overwhelming. Just look at them all, try to imagine doing a reading with each deck. Close your eyes. Your hand should float the the right deck.
