First, I'd like to thank you for the opportunity to teach your child this school year! This will be my fourth year teaching. The last three years I taught second grade at the Science Academy of Chicago.
I love having parents involved in the classroom. There are many ways to be a part of your child's learning experience at school.

Reading Logs are given out on Monday and are due that Friday. Late reading logs are not accepted without a parent signature and must be submitted the following Monday. (Only one late reading log accepted a month even with parent signature.)
Each month a Simple and Fun Book Report will be due on a book of a certain genre.

WHAT SHOULD I READ?
Spelling & Vocabulary words are given to students Monday and can be turned in any day that week. Late work is not accepted as this homework assignment is used as a study tool. On Wednesday the pre-spelling test will be given so students can concentrate on words they miss.
All other homework assignments are due the following day unless stated otherwise.
CLASSROOM POLICIES -
Students are to walk into the classroom and get two sharpened pencils.
*A pencil box up front is available for sharp pencils. One in = one out. There is no
sharpening of pencils during class time.
*If homework is due, turn into the in-box.
Start on bellwork - typically will be a quick writing exercise, grammar study, or questions
over previous days work as a refresher.
Using the restroom - allowed by raising two fingers so class discussions are not
interrupted.
Class discussions - Students need to raise their hand and wait their turn so that all students have an opportunity to contribute to the class discussion.
Classroom Behavior - During lectures and activities students are to be listening and working quietly independently or within their group.
If a student chooses not to work with others either by talking too loudly or being off task than that individual will be given an assignment covering the same topic but will be asked to work alone.
Unprepared for class - A student will not be allowed free-time but will instead work on homework that was not turned in.
Hallway - Students need to use their marshmallow voices and feet.
Effort - Students are to always try their best. I will do the same!
WRITING WORKSHOP
* Always be active in the writing process: brainstorming, drafting, editing, writing,
publishing, or illustrating
* A piece of writing must be turned in every two weeks
- Editing checklist has been followed and double checked by a partner
- Review and attach grading rubric
* Must sign up for teacher conference before publication
* Conversations should revolve around editing and should stay on-task
* Submit one piece of writing to a formal contest, magazine, or other real purpose
GUIDED READING/LITERATURE CIRCLES
* Stay on topic - Only talk about the book and directly relevant subjects
* Listen when others in your group are speaking
* Respect the opinion of everyone in your group
* Contribute to the group discussion
* Use a quiet voice so that everyone in class can hear
* If you finish early discuss any part of the book you wish
