To build literacy in my classroom, I focus on text comprehension, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, and fluency. The methods below define my approach to teaching language arts.

* Print rich environment
* Morning Message
* Mini-lessons
* Writers workshop
* Shared writing & reading
* Guided reading
* SSR
* Word wall lessons
* Readers' Theatre
* Literature Circles
* Monthly Book Reports

Methods of Multi-Level Instruction:
- Guided Reading is taught with two selections at grade level and one below. Instruction consists of multiple readings to increase fluency. Whole class, partner, and small group formats will be utilized. I work with a group of students during this time.

- During SSR I hold individual conferences or read with a student. I read a variety of books to the class, sometimes a chapter book and sometimes a short story book to show my approval of many types of reading selections. A wide array of different types of books are available. Every other week I go to the library to get books related to what we are studying in the classroom.

- Making Words, Words You Know, and Reading/Writing Rhymes are just some of the activities that are multi-level in creating phonemic awareness! I do have weekly spelling tests on top of word wall work.

- While students are writing, I hold publishing conferences where I tailor teaching instruction to each student's needs.

- Extensive pre-writing activities, editing, and in-depth organization in the writing process helps struggling writers.
