Prerequisites Linguistics 20 and Linguistics 103.  You may not take this course without these prerequisites.

Required Text B. Hayes (2006), Introductory Phonology, Academic Publishing Services (APS) Course Reader.  On sale in the Ackerman Bookstore under "Kambourakis Ling 120a".  Please alert me immediately if they run out of copies.

Content:  This course surveys the theory of phonology at an elementary level.  As far as possible, the course will be based on learning by doing.  Lectures, assignments, and exams will focus heavily on analyses of data from a variety of languages.

Course Requirements: � Weekly readings
� 7 homework assignments (35%) � data analysis problem sets.
Each homework is worth 5% of your grade(7 homeworks x 5 %=35%). 
� Midterm (15%), in class May 3rd
� Final exam (20%), June 12th
� Term Paper  (30%), about 8-10 pages, due June 12th, at final exam.  Prospectus of of your paper topic approved my me (2% of paper grade), to be turned in in class or sent by email on or before May 17th
