1- Explain why Saudi Arabia is important to the Muslims.
2- Discuss how oil affects the lives of the people of the Arabian Peninsula.

Anticipatory Set:  (2 minutes)
Show picture.  Ask why so many people are there?

Procedure:
(10 minutes)
-Students have already labeled a map of the region, with political and physical features.
-Put the map on the on the overhead projector.  Call on students to identify areas as I point them out.  Use attached map to choose which to ask about.  (I will have a labeled map.)  Ask about landforms?  Where are there mountains?  What other landforms are there?  Why is most of the center of the peninsula covered in desert?  (Mountains block the rain.  Be prepared to explain how this works.)

Islam.  (10 minutes)
-Preface with explanation that we are going to talk about a religion that is important to the region.  Not trying to promote it in any way, just understand the religion to help understand the culture.
Brainstorm-  Assign a timekeeper to watch when we have reached two minutes.  For two minutes, they should raise their hand, and I will call on them to tell me what they already know about Islam and Muslims.  During that time, we are not going to discuss any of the items, just write them down.  After time is called, we will discuss what they said.  -Ask students to list what they know about Islam.  List everything they say on the overhead.  Discuss the things they list.  Ask students to elaborate on short answers.  Reinforce correct answers.  Correct incorrect information.  Have sheet of specific points to prompt for or address.

(17 minutes)
-Give out worksheet on oil.  Have them get with a partner.  They should read the worksheet to each other and then answer questions together.  Both should fill out worksheet, but can discuss the answers together first.  Let them use their text to help them in addition to info on the worksheet.  I will be collecting the worksheet.  (15 min)
-Go over answers aloud.  I will call on students to share what they had for each question.  (2 min)

Closure:
(3 minutes)
-Review objectives:
-Ask students to write their answer to the following question:
Why do all Muslims want to go to Saudi Arabia?
