Lesson Plan: Arabian Peninsula

Class profile:
20 students, plus at least 2 absent.
11 female, 9 male.  Diversity: 2 African-American females.

Grade: 7
Subject: Geography/ World Cultures
Time: 7:45-9:30am

Concept:
Geography, peoples, and culture of the Arabian Peninsula

Content:
Map of Region, Notes on Islam, Textbook, Worksheet on Oil.

Special Needs:
-This is an Inclusion class.  Read all directions aloud, to help students who do not read as well.  Make extra effort to be clear with directions.  Go over complex directions a second time.  Most other adaptations are to testing.  There is another teacher in the classroom specifically to assist the students with special needs.

Standards and Benchmarks:
Geography for Life Standards 1, 4, 6, 9, 10, 12, 16

Objectives:
1- Explain why Saudi Arabia is important to the Muslims.
2- Discuss how oil affects the lives of the people of the Arabian Peninsula.
3- Review geography of the Arabian Peninsula

Anticipatory Set:
(10 minutes)
-Students have already labeled a map of the region, with political and physical features.
-Put the map on the on the overhead projector.  Call on students to identify areas as I point them out.  Use attached map to choose which to ask about.  (I will have a labeled map.)  Ask about landforms?  Where are there mountains?  What other landforms are there?  Why is most of the center of the peninsula covered in desert?  (Mountains block the rain.  Be prepared to explain how this works.)

Procedure:
(10-15 minutes)
Islam.
-Preface with explanation that we are going to talk about a religion that is important to the region.  Not trying to promote it in any way, just understand the religion to help understand the culture.
-Ask students to list what they know about Islam.  Write everything on the overhead.  Make categories for: locations, beliefs, important people, and culture.  Discuss the things they list.  Ask students to elaborate on short answers.  Reinforce correct answers.  Correct incorrect information.  Have sheet of specific points to prompt for or address.

(17 minutes)
-Give out worksheet on oil.  Have them answer questions.  Let them use their text to help them in addition to info on the worksheet.  (11 min)
-Ask them to get with a partner, I will assign partners.  Have them discuss answers, see if have the same answer.  (2 min)
-Go over answers aloud.  I will call on students to share what they had for each question.  (2 min)

Closure:
(3 minutes)
-Review objectives:
-Ask students to explain why Saudi Arabia is important to the Muslims.
-Also to discuss how oil affects the lives of the people of the Arabian Peninsula.
Ask students to add until answer is complete.
