December 04, 1998 -- July 16, 1999 Kriste was born Deccember4,1998.She weighed 6 lbs,9 oz, 18 inches long.She was a beautiful baby,perfect in every way.On January 18,1999 I noticed she was looking more and more yellow in color.I called her pediatrician and she told me to bring her in right away.The dr. took one look at her and said she needed to have some blood tests run .The tests came back "abnormal liver function".She sent us to St. Louis Childrens Hospital right away. Two days later after all the needles and tests and even more tests,the G.I. doc. said she suspected biliary atresia.I didnt even know what that was.They took a biopsy of her liver and it turned out the doc. was right.It was biliary atresia. She was scheduled for an operation called the Kasai. The Kasai didnt work so after a month of more tests and evaluation Kristen was put on the transplant list for a new liver.On July 11, 1999 the pager they gave us went off, and it wasnt the hospitals phone number so i didnt think much of it. i called the number back and the lady said "We have a liver for Kristen". I dropped to my the phone I was so shocked.We called the hwy patrol and told them what we were driving and why we were speeding so we wouldnt get pulled over! When we got there we had to wait on the transplant team to give word that the liver was ok.Everything was on schedule,Kristen was going to have her tranplant at 6am. It was the longest night of our lives. 6 am finally came , we got to carry her down to the operating doors.Handing her over to the nurse was the hardest thing Ive ever had to do. seven hours later she was out of surgery. Every thing went well.The next night,July 13,1999 kristens abdomen was very very swollen and the doctors were very concerned.They took her back into surgey to open her back up and find out why.The doc. came out 2 hrs later and said the liver was making her very sick, and if she didnt get another liver soon she was going to die.They put her on the emergency transplant list and one did come available but it wasnt any good.We still had to wait.Morning came and the doctors asked if we ever thought of a live donor transplant . Without pause, I said I would do it,I ccouldnt lose my baby.I gave Kristen part of my liver July 14 ,1999.On July 16,1999 Kristen was very sick again.All her organs began shutting down. She died that night at 11 pm. Months later the autopsy showed that Kristen died of an infection called sepsis. They said the only part of her that didnt shut down was the part of liver that i gave to her. It has been almost 3 yrs gone by and i miss her now as much as i did when we 1st lost her.I dont think my pain will ever go away. i want to dedicate 2 songs to Kristen,'if i had only known", by Reba, and "angels among us ", by Alabama., Kristen, I love you so much and miss you more and more each and every day. Not a day goes by that i dont think of you and still cry.You will always be my special little "Kissy pooh'.you will always be our gaurdian angel. I cant wait till the day I get to see you again and hold you for all eternity.Your beautiful face and glowing smile and your beautiful personality will forever be in my our hearts. Although you were in pain you would still show that wonderful smile and i am forever grateful that i had the time i did with you. nmn |
