Compare and Contrast
Day 1
Compare-to show how 2 or more things are different
Contrast-to show how 2 or more things are different
Before we even talk about writing C/C essays, we need to practice showing how things are the same and different
"Gum Lab"
· With a partner-each gets a piece of gum (a different kind). Together they fill out the characteristics sheet (approx. 20 min). They will use the sheet to create sentences for each characteristic.
· When completed, we will create sample paragraphs based on their findings.
Day 2 (coincides w/ day 7 of Hughes Unit)
1. Hand out C/C assignment #1 (see Hughes Unit).
2. Hand out sample C/C essay and C/C words list.
3. Read essay and discuss. Pick out C/C words.
4. Essay set-up: Para#1=qualities and info on topic #1; Para#2=qualities on subject #2; Para#3=comparing the two subjects. {**With higher groups, have them come up w/ intro and conclusion paragraphs if time}
5. How to set up your essay: First find the info about your two topics (like we did w/ the gum). Look at the qualities of the two pieces.
6. Complete a chart and Venn Diagram for the two stories that are being C/C'ed.
