William McDonald married Anne( ? .) Their children were John, Jim, Arlita, William and Mary Anne.
William McDonald sold his saloon and left Indiana. His brother in-law, James Allen, took him to the Illinois line at Vincennes, Indiana. That was the last he was seen here. He married in Texas and had a ranch called Circle 1 McDonald. The legality of this marriage is questionable, since there was no divorce from the first wife. He was hung by a lynch mob at ninety years old for allegedly attacking his wife's eighteen year old niece, which was probably a scheme to get his property, since the lynch mob was headed by his step-sons, after signing over his property to his second wife.
His daughter, Arilta, married William Hart. They had two girls and a boy. He was a civil war veteran.
John and Jim lived and worked together- lumberjacking. John was accused of killing Jim. He was brought to trial, but was found not guilty. John had palsy and was sent to the county home. He smoked a pipe and he shook so much, he set the bed afire and they sent him to a mental institution, where he died in his nineties.
William, (Bill) was five years old, when his father left and his uncle James Allen took the family in and kept them. Uncle Bill worked for various farmers when he grew up. He was a favorite of Roy Allen's kids, keeping them entertained with stories and bringing them goodies from the farm- walnuts, apples and paw paws. He was a small man with a big heart. He left Roy's house on a Saturday morning to go to town and died at the E & I Railroad Station, where he had stopped to rest. It was in February and at 63 years old, he was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Washington, Indiana. |
