Here On Earth: Chapter 9

"Can't believe I just made love to someone who's dead," Nick stepped out of the shower, wrapping a towel around his waist.
"Don't say it like that! I don't like the term dead. It's too insensitive." Eva reached for his robe and pulled it on, then reached out and wrapped her arms around Nick's neck. "I prefer the term deceased." She kissed him.
"I have to admit it was good," He kissed her again, loving the electricity that her touch conveyed. "It made me feel like I was a light bulb that was being turned on. You have so much electricity in you!"
"That's what happens when you're dead."
"I thought you preferred the term deceased."
"You hush!" She laughed, kissing him again.
"Eva, I hate to say this, but we can't do that anymore."
"Why not?" Her voice was pouty as she kissed his neck.
"Because I don't want you guys competing for my decision. And I don't want to choose you just because the sex is good."
She looked straight into his eyes. "I didn't mean it like that."
"I know you didn't." He smoothed back her damp bangs. "I just don't want to make my decision for the wrong reasons. I hope you understand."
"I do." She moved her arms from around his neck and ran her hands down his still wet chest, then slowly faded away.
Nick hung his head. This is going to be so hard! So hard! He ran his hand through his wet hair, pulling on the tangles. He turned to the mirror and grabbed his brush, struggling with the tangles. He threw the brush down in frustration, then leaned in closer to the mirror, staring himself in the eye.
"What are you going to do, Carter? Who's it gonna be? Your best friend, or your lover?"
