If death is only the beginning, then why does everything seem to come to an end?
Chapter Five
The sun rose with the start of a new day and Howie dragged himself out of bed reluctantly. As soon as his feet hit the ground, he knew today would be a different day. A feeling in the pit of his stomach told him so, and he believed it. Be prepared, the voice in his head told him. Eat breakfast! The voice from his stomach told him. Howie obeyed.
He walked lazily to the kitchen and poured himself a bowl of cereal, not willing to make anything else. He sat at the bar and munched, the munching of his cereal the only sound in the entire house.
Well, not exactly.
There were sounds, echoes really, of footsteps slowly approaching Howie’s tired body. They were temporarily covered by the carpet. It didn’t make a difference because Howie hadn’t heard them in the first place. The sound of his munching rang loudly in his ears, covering up most of the others sounds of the house.
Ebony reached slowly for the knife rack that was neatly displayed in Howie’s kitchen. Leave it to the prude one to even have his knives organized, she thought rolling her eyes. She picked up four. One for each hand and one for each of her jacket pockets. She kept the little ones in her jacket and kept the two largest in either hand. She approached Howie’s figure quietly but faster now out of anticipation.
Howie laid his hand down on the counter, his fingers spread wide. Ebony smiled as she approached, knowing exactly how she would let him know that she was hers. She flipped the knife in her hand and stood directly behind him.
“Hello lover.” She whispered, her voice low and provocative. Howie turned around quickly at the sound of her voice, his eyes wide with fear. Ebony gazed into his eyes for only a second before she slashed the knife through the air, coming down hard against the counter, chopping off the bulk of Howie’s pinky.
He immediately grabbed his hand and jumped up from the bar, running to the front door. Ebony had already thought of him trying to escape. She had wired a bomb across the door. She waited for the inevitable gasp, and when she heard it, she slowly walked towards the entrance hallway where she found Howie looking completely defeated.
“It’s your turn, lover.”
