Affairs of Death (PART III of Death)
Story by Daisy

Death is a shadow that veils you like a peaceful sleep...or a nightmare.

Chapter One

Brian woke up that morning with a pounding headache. His eyes were almost swollen shut and his mouth tasted sour. He thought about what had happened before and shut his eyes to the tears that began to form in them. First Kevin and then Howie, he thought rubbing his eyes with his fist. And Howie died so brutally… Brian shoved the picture of Howie’s body pinned to the living room wall out of his mind and slipped out of bed, determined not to cry that day.

He showered, dressed, and headed out. He didn’t know where he was going but he didn’t care. He let his feet do the walking and the steering as he shoved his hands in his pockets and sighed heavily. He walked the long streets and passed a newsstand, looking up just in time to see Howie’s and Kevin’s smiling faces staring back at him from one of the newspapers.

He gasped audibly and the woman walking next to him looked at him strangely. He walked quickly away from the newsstand, desperate to keep the memories from flooding back to him. But he wasn’t strong enough to keep them away.

He and Kevin had been such good friends growing up and even better friends now that they were older and had wives and a career together. They had become so close and then he was suddenly taken out of his life so abruptly that Brian didn’t know how to react. He thought of how close he and Howie had also been, remembering all the many deep conversations that they had had together and smiled faintly with the loving memories.

But they were both gone now and were just that—memories. There was no way to get them back. Brian turned around abruptly in his path and started heading in the other direction towards the local library. No matter what the cost, he knew he had to find the killer. And he would stop at nothing to find out. Well, except for, maybe, death.

Ebony watched him closely and almost missed him when he turned around. What is he doing? She questioned herself, but turned around and headed in the same direction. She followed him all the way to the library but decided not to go in. She had no clue what he was doing in there. And she had no clue that he was desperately trying to find her.
