~~*Chapter One*~~

“Brian, I love you.” I held onto him tightly, afraid to let go for fear of never seeing him again.  “Promise me you’ll call.”

“I promise.” He whispered, kissing me on the forehead. I cringed as I listened to the intercom called out his flight number. “That’s me.”

“Baby, don’t go!” I wrapped my arms around his neck and held him tighter still. “Don’t leave me! Please don’t go!”

“I’m sorry, but this is how it has to be.  I have to get on that flight and meet up with the other guys.” He pulled me gently but firmly away from him and looked deep into my eyes. “I promise I’ll call. And I’ll write too.”

“I love you,” I whispered, tilting my chin up for a most wanted kiss.

“I’ll never forget you, Ashley.” He met my lips for one last kiss before he left me standing alone in the airport.

“Come on, Ash, you knew this wouldn’t last!” My best friend’s voice came through the phone.

“I know, but he was so good to me!” I dropped down on my bed and put my feet up against the wall. “The whole time we were together he was so romantic and witty and that’s just what I like in a guy! But I guess I knew from the start that it would end with the summer.”

“And that’s why you need to move on! I hear that Brandon Sykes is gonna have a huge bash at his place on Friday night. The perfect place to hook up!” That was why I loved Darcy so much. She had been my best friend for our entire lives and she always knew what to say.

“Thanks, Darce!” I hung up the phone and thought about Brian.

I thought about the way that we had gone on moonlit strolls on the beach, how we had kissed by candlelight. I thought about the way that he held my hand so warmly and told me that I was beautiful. I loved every part of my time with him, but, as Darcy said, I have to face the reality. He was just my summer fling. The boy I met during my summer vacation at the Hawaiian resort that I would have to just let go. I slid under the covers and snuggled in closely.

“Oh, Brian,” I whispered before falling into a peaceful sleep.
