Roots in the Bible of the Prayer “Loor Tsayneets” from the Evening Office

Compilation by Greg Andonian

Intro:

Regarding the project on Loor Tsayneets, I found that some phrases such as “for leading us through this day in peace,” are very unique to the Armenian prayers, in that our struggle for survival and against the great empires threatening our church and people are reflected in the prayers. You will not easily find a these ideas or phrases in the various versions of the Bible, so that it no longer becomes a problem of wording in the various versions, but a realization that the Armenian prayers and sharagans have a uniqueness to them.

Prayer Translated into English:

Hear our voice, O Lord our God. Receive our supplications, the lifting up of our hands and the words of our prayers. Sanctify this, our evening offering, so that we may prepare it for your pleasure with a sweet fragrance. Increase in us, almighty Lord, faith, hope and love and all deeds of virtue. So that leading a devout, religious life day and night according to your good will, we may become worthy to beseech you for the salvation of our souls, and for our spiritual life, Lord, and to receive grace and mercy from you. So that we may thankfully glorify the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen

Bowing down to you, O Lord our God, we thank you for leading us through this day in peace. Lord, we ask you to lead us through this evening and the coming night without sin and without stumbling, to stand firm, and to remain steadfast in faith, in hope, in love, and in the observance of your commandments. We ask you for peace in the whole world, and stability in your holy church and salvation for our souls. So that receiving from you all that we ask, we may also always send up on high great and proper praise to your all-powerful dominion, O Christ our God, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Root from the Bible:

Daniel 9:19 O Lord, hear;

Genesis 23:6 Hear us, my lord. Thou art a prince of God among us. In the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead. None of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead.

O Lord our God

Daniel 9:15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

Receive our Supplications

The lifting up of our hands and words of our prayers
