Parasite
Possible Symptoms:  Fish appears to be darting around, it may be scratching against the sides of the tank glass and/or other objects.
Phsyical Apperance: discoloration/whitish opaque film or spots/holes/parasites.
Common Name: Ich
Scientific Name: Ichtyophthirius
Cause: Rapid change in temperature or ph
Symptoms: Large white spots sprinkled over the body. Fish may be darting around and scratching on objects.
Treatment: Malachite green for at least 5 days.
NOTE:With ANY medication you use make sure you follow the directions given with the product!
Name: Neon Tetra Disease
Cause: A protozoan parasite.
Symptoms: Erratic swimming behavior and loss of color. The loss of the red stipe on a neon or cardinal tetra is a common sign. It normally affects small tetras, but it can also affect danios and barbs.
Treatment: It is hard to treat. Medication containing nalagram or furazone has good results.
Common Name: Hole-in-the-Head Disease
Cause: A protozoan parasite, Hexamita.
Symptoms: Small holes appeare in the head region and possibly in other regions. Cichlids, particularly discus and oscars, are susceptible.
Treatment: This usually results from overcrowding, poor water quality, or overuse of feeder fish. First remedy the cause, then treat with metronidazole added into the water.
Common Name: Anchor Worm
Cause: A crustacean parasite, Lernia.
Symptoms: It is a large parasite found most often on goldfish. It can be 3/4" long and found attached to the body of the fish.
Treatment: You can manually remove the adult parasites from the fish. (Not sure what meds should be used, will find out soon.)
Fungal
The fish appears to dart around. It may be scratching against the sides of the tank glass and other objects.
Physical apperance: thick tufts of material covering the body.
Common Name: True Fungus
Cause: Saprolegnia
Symptoms: A greyish-brown cottony material covering the body. It may occur on a fish after it has been injured.
Treatment: Methylene blue or any True fungus medication.
Common Name: Mouth or Body Fungus
Cause: It is actually a bacterial disease, usually caused by the bacterium Flexibacter
Symptoms: Thick greyish-white patches around mouth or body of fish.
Bacterial
The fish appears sluggish and may not be eating.
Physical Apperance: loss of color, frayed fins, bloated body, or red streaks throughout body.
Common Name: Finrot
Cause: Pseudomonas and Aeromonas
Symptoms: Torn, ragged, or stumpy finson fish. Often edged in white.
Treatment: Place a drop of methylene blue or malachite green directly on any affected fins may help disinfect the areas and prevent secondary infections. Treat with an atibiotic as well.
