My Experiment

Tonights the night
Tonights the night Im testing my experiment
To see if the damn thing works right
To see if all the math I put myself through
All the paper cuts and chalk inhalation
Was worth what I should have just spent on a coffee and a doughnut anyway
And the nights growing impatient now
As I hesitate
And wait
To see if the thing might just up and fly on its own
But even baby sparrows need a kick start out of the nest
And this old thing is nowhere near as effortless as the feather was to evolution
And yeah maybe I procrastinate too much
So
Tonights the night
Tonights the night Im testing my experiment
Im testing it between my elbow, the ashtray and the gummy bar
Im testing my experiment in precise measures of sulphur
On a rusty scale
Im testing my experiment on a stranger on a bus
To see if it works over my shoulder with a glance that says
Mind your own
Im testing its fluidity in the concrete heart of the word brick
Making sure it comes off with a gentle wipe
And sinks deeper than an Auschwitz tattoo
Im creating escape hatches for it
In case it goes on a submarine one day
Im testing my experiment at a high school dance
In the corner where The Cobwebs hang out
Teasing their hair for hours on end
As they watch The Cool Boys dance with The Sluts
My experiment is easily tested in the creases of Vincent Prices flickering face
On my late night TV as this House of Wax melts into meaningless allusions
Its got batteries
Its got an AC adapter
Its got a solar panel
A heart, blood, oxygen
And a sore ass on the bus
Im testing my experiment in the pop music residue
Seeping out of some fools headphones
Whos occupying the seat in front of me
Im testing my experiment on a sad businessman at happy hour
Im testing it with hair-trigger callipers
A crescent wrench
And a limited bank account
Im wearing thin
Im seeing haze
Im an inch thicker and coughing cacophony until this experiment fizzles out
Or this greyhound reaches my next home
Tonights the night Im testing my experiment
Or maybe its testing me.
