Polaris Lyrics
Here are lyrics for all of the Polaris songs from their album Songs From The Adventures of Pete and Pete for your enjoyment. These are all the interpretations of yours truely, The Krebmaster. All songs are copyrighted by the band. Grey italics are lyrics I wasn't sure of, and therefore are, most likely, wrong. Thanks to The Monster's Loose - A Polaris Site for some help on a few lines I had no clue on. ;)
There has been much curiosity over the indecipherable 3rd line of the song. No one, except Mark Mulcahy himself, knows the true lyrics. One speculation has been that the line was very personal to Mark, and he didn't want to reveal it. Others have guessed that the line was something inappropriate to say on Nickelodeon. Whatever the reason may be, Polaris fans continue to be puzzled about the mysterious 3rd line of "Hey Sandy."
The line I have written below as the 3rd line of "Hey Sandy" is a version that is popularly believed to be the correct lyric.

Intro
The album starts out with an intro preceeding the "Hey Sandy" track. A man's voice talking over a sort of classical-style music says:
"Jupiter, or Thor, is perfect.
We need atlas for our long distance stuff.
The Titan will be even better.
They shouldn't have cancelled Nammo.
Wait 'til you see our submarines with Polaris."
Then it cuts to static-y recording of a spaceship launch:
"Attention all personell this is CVTS. Base vehical pre-count operations will start on my mark at 5... 4... 3... 2..."
Hey Sandy
About the song: Possibly Polaris' most famous song, you will recognize "Hey Sandy" as the intro song on The Adventures of Pete & Pete. The show version of the song cuts out the second verse and solos. "Hey Sandy" is accordingly about Kent State student Sandy Schuer who was killed by the National Guard during the riot in 1970. (See the page at Polaris Web.)
Hey smilin' strange
You're lookin' happily deranged
Could you settle to shoot me?
Or have you picked your target yet
Chorus:
Hey Sandy (aye aye aye aye)
Don't you talk back (aye aye aye aye)
Hey Sandy
Five feet away
End of speech is the end of the day
We was only funnin'
But guiltily I thought you had it comin'
Chorus
(solo)
Chorus 2x
She is Staggering
About the song: This song is one of first three songs made for the Pete & Pete series. Originally titled "Staggering," it was first released on a cassette as part of a Kellogs promotion.
Are you crazy, man?
You didn't notice her
You must be blind
'Cause all I do now
Is think about how
She will be mine
I couldn't stand up
I couldn't sit down
One look at her and I stumbled around
One look at her
I get irrational
She ties my tounge
I saw her downtown
On a cloudy day
She brought the sun
She's not part of the scene
She don't socialize
She does her own thing
She's ahead of her time
Just the right speed
She is staggering
I couldn't stand up
I couldn't sit down
One look at her and I stumbled around
She is staggering (2x)
(flute solo)
She's uncommonly
Heavenly
She is so rare
She's beautiful
Exceptional
She doesn't care
I couldn't stand up
I couldn't sit down
One look at her and I stumbled around
I couldn't get to sleep
And I couldn't eat
She's all that I want
She is all that I need
She is staggering (4x)
Waiting For October
About the song: According to an email posted at The Monster's Loose, this song is about "a religious nut outside of (or maybe inside) the gigantic Billy Graham "concert" thing in NYC (in 1991 I think). The nut is saying to the people leaving that the end of the world is coming on October 28th, 1999." Really hard song to figure out the lyrics to, also. The mp3 for this song is on the Polaris website, Mezzotint.
They're playin' in Central Park
Check out him, he's shouting at the gate,
"Billy didn't tell you everything
Or did he mention the magic day?"
"Well I figured out from a fig tree
It's the chosen fruit of the devil himself
Now you've been bad for fifty years
And now it looks like that is taken off his belt
Chorus:
Waitin' for October
I cross my fingers, cross my heart, and hope to die
Waitin' for October
I'm in the book and I'll be learnin' how to fly
He's comin' down but he's not alone
He's gonna bring an army of saints
And he's takin' all his brides home
And then destroying what remains
Chorus
(on last line:) I'm in the book and I'll be learnin'...
To be winged
To be winged
Ooh...
I'm hopin' that the end will start it all again
And that's where human history will die
I said, Nelson was so right about the day
'Cause it all ends in 1999
And commences on the 28th, the 28th, the 28th
Chorus (2x)
I'm hopin' that the end will start it all again (6x)
Saturnine
(robot-like voice) You've found the earth
(whispered) Let's go
There's only roses in here
And you're dissatisfied
It's like a candy store
You're dissatisfied
You want everything
You're dissatisfied
You get everything
You stay dissatisfied
Pre-Chorus:
Make it mine, all mine, all mine
Here's a double dare
Take home plate if you can
But there won't be anyone there
Chorus:
I see sunshine
You'll be saturnine
I see sunshine
You'll be saturnine
You got a Hollywood star
And you freak out
In the Shangri-La
Where you freak out
You've got the whole nine yards
But you freak out
Yeah you freak out
Pre-Chorus
Chorus
(spoken) If there is a time you'd miss
Through the black months
To be whatever you want
Hey!
(solo)
You can't see the sweet things
You only see the bad
Chorus
You'll be saturnine (2x)
Saturnine
Everywhere
I put your photograph away
I can't look at you today
I put your letters upstairs
But it's not good because you're everywhere
I can try to hide
But why waste my time
You left your glasses behind
Somebody said you were doing fine
I play a game that you're not there
But it's not good because you're everywhere
I can try to hide
But why waste my time
Sense around of you
Everything I do
Says you're everywhere
Everywhere
(harmonica solo)
I hear a song that you sang
It hits my head like a circus train
I cried out, "Are you there?"
You're there because you're everywhere
I can try to hide
But why waste my time
Sense around of you
Everything I do
I can try to hide
But why waste my time
Sense surrounding me
Everything I see
Says you're everywhere
Everywhere (3x)
Ivy Boy
About the song: If you can make heads our tails out of what this song is about, consider yourself lucky. :P
Holy Holly
She don't approve at all
She thinks that she's a pony
Prancin' in the front hall
Sleeps with her saddle on
Gets up and rides at dawn
Nobody knows what's wrong
But she can't keep her trousers on
Humpty Ma-Dumpty
She's all better now
She thought that she was somebody else for a while
A house at the North Pole
She went for a daily stroll
Wearin' a wig and a mink stole
She's the daughter of rock 'n' roll
(solo)
Ivy Boy
He couldn't be trusted
Even his face was an alias
Tried to be like Monty Hall
Livin' like a rubber ball
Found himself in Montreal
Ivy couldn't deal at all (14x)
Summerbaby
About the song: In the Pete & Pete episode "A Hard Day's Pete," this song is played by the band in Mrs. Chicutti's garage, and later by Younger Pete's band The Blowholes. The episode features Miracle Legion (that is, Polaris plus "Mr. Ray" Neal) as the band in Mrs. Chicutti's garage. Nickelodeon changed the lyric "every drop of sex" to "every time I guess" when they featured the song on the show.
Summerbaby, come on baby, show me the town
I didn't know that you'd be such a short visit
Once a year I notice that you're not around
Mama says you went when you were exquisite
Pre-Chorus 1:
If you've seen all I've done
When I alone I do things that nobody knows
We were all wonderin' where you came from
Last night we were hypothesising that you were an angel
Sometimes it feels like you're lookin' down
From up above where angels are found
Pre-Chorus 1
Pre-Chorus 2:
Every drop of sex
And every little mess I make
I was around, I was around
Chorus:
I was around
(nobody knows, nobody knows)
(4x)
Do you see a lot of angels up there like you?
Wolfgang and Vincent Van Gogh?
Have you seen Josephine?
Someone from town like Marshall Brown?
Or someone you know?
Pre-Chorus 1
Pre-Chorus 2
Chorus (8x)
Coronado II
(robot voice) This is the rocket powered space capsule. All systems are go.
It's kind of a low blow
Not the one I got, but the one you gave
It's really too soon to know
How much of you will there be left for me to save
He's a scallywag
I have another friend that he did the same thing to
And then he brags
And he'll kiss and tell me, kiss and tell me, every time you do
Chorus:
Monte Carlo
Coronado II
The San Diego Zoo
Or a hundred nights with you
Won't change my mind
(jazzy break)
You rang and she called early
You were laughin' and she was askin', "Can we still be friends?"
And you like to think that sometimes you can mail me
To a never, never land, where the stories never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever end
Chorus
Ooooh... (6x)
Chorus
Won't change my mind (2x)
Ashamed of the Story I Told
Was it the nothing I said
It's so attractive to be so silently
It keeps the mystery on and it seems
It keeps me hangin' on
Chorus:
Another letter from home
I don't know why I even read it
It's one big question
I don't know why I must repeat it
Maybe I care a little
Perhaps I'm ashamed of the story I told
But you were so eager
Was it so bad for me to say what you want to hear?
Chorus
And you'll feel better if I don't speak (2x)
(musical interlude)
Chorus (2x)
As Usual
About the song: Just something interesting I found, but the lines "In a world forgetting, by a world forgotten" may possibly be a reference to a line in a poem by Alexander Pope called "Eloisa to Abelard": "How happy is the blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot."
And it's comin' 'round to run away or dissappear (2x)
Try climbin' up
Those frozen stairs
I'm standin' here
Nobody cares
They're all there and all they see is nothin' new
'Cause nothin' sparkles like it did when I knew you
Chorus:
Walk around
As usual
All alone
As usual
It's getting late
As usual
I can't go home
(As usual)
I just won't leave
My little room
What's the point
Of me wearin' blue?
One man parade, pull down my shades and lock the doors
'Cause it's better blue for them to see than to take the veil
Chorus
And it's comin' 'round to run away or dissappear (2x)
I can't find
A sympathetic ear
Another day
Feels like another year
In a world forgetting
By a world forgotten
In a world forgetting
By a world forgotten
In a world forgetting
Chorus (2x)
And it's comin' 'round to run away or dissappear (8x)
Recently
Recently (4x)
I acted cool, I asked around
But you could not receive
I was desperate, indifferent
To whether anyone called
You walked in, I clicked on
You could not refuse
You asked for me, oh we know it now
So get the rocket, light the fuse
Recently I kissed you
It's like a dream come true
Recently you're likin' me, and I'm really likin' you
Never apart, we go around
Siamese in crazy love
I learned your quirks
And all your world
Oh, what did I do before you?
Recently I need to be with you all the time
Recently some jealousy has creeped into my mind
Recently I noticed that it's good to be alone
Recently my friends, they never call me anymore
Recently I'm happier, bein' by myself
Recently I'm all alone, but I'm not lonely
I'm not lonely (4x)
The Monster's Loose
You're absolutely so much
Better than him
A second thought is too much
It's two too many
She's a fact of life, but nevermind
Get away, I'll wait for someone kind
Such a vain iconoclaster
A racketteer who never feared
The news of his departure
Was greeted here with a cheshire grin
Oh, can't get away from you
Chorus:
The monster's loose
You're luckier than you know
The one that got away
Well he's gone, she's gone
A great big celebration
Seems more in order
And it's a great big revelation
That you pulled the plug on the whole thing
I'm so thrilled for you, really
Chorus
It's so easy to be fooled
By such a crackerjack
There's at least ??
Now here's all you have to know, Woah!
Just let the monster go, Oh...
(solo)
Chorus
The monster's loose (2x)
Chorus
And it's gone
Outro
At the end of the album, proceeding "The Monster's Loose" (at about 5:30 min.) is a bunch of sound clips that sound to be from radio broadcasts circa the 60s. Most of it is about space-related things.
