Childhood
         John Calvin was born in France on July 10, 1509. He had 2 brothers and 2 half sisters. His mother who was very pious died in 1518. After his mother died, when Calvin was 14 his father enrolled him at the University of Paris. He was encouraged by his father to study law instead of theology, so he also attended universities at Orleans and Bourges. Calvin studied theology and in the middle of the war between Renaissance education and Scholasticism, he became strongly interested in a new way of thinking. Calvin�s father died in 1531, after that Calvin pursued a scholarly career in Paris. His opinions gradually turned to disagreement with the Roman position. He became under the humanist influence and became interested in the growing rebellion against conservative theology. In 1533, what he later described as a sudden conversion, and he turned all his attention to the cause of the Reformation. With several friends he grew to appreciate the humanistic and reforming movements, and he undertook studies in the Greek Bible.
