Rest In The Lord

As I went to bed
Fluffing pillows up just right,
All at peace around me;
I was safe here through the night.
The ticking of the bedside clock
Would sing me to my sleep,
As I prayed, drowsily,
And my soul to keep.
As sleep began to over take me,
Visions began to fill my mind;
Not peaceful restful one's
And, then, rest I could not find.

Scenes of soldiers
In their battle wear,
Peace was not their blessing.
No rest or peace was there.
No restful slumber for them,
Alert they must remain, you see;
Listening through the weary night,
To hear what they could not see.
As peace and rest were taken,
My mind could not retreat;
As the brave young warriors
Prepared for the enemy they would meet.

As my heart was stirred to pray,
I could see, even more,
How they dug shallow graves in the sand;
Beside their tanks of war.
Sleep was in little snips,
Never really rest.
Honor, for this mighty nation,
Had them to the test.
In pictures, I had seen that day ~
How they dug each their shallow grave;
To sleep but never really rest.
Dear Lord, cover them and keep them safe.

Send the mighty angels
From your throne, above.
Surround them with your mercy
And keep them by your love.
"Oh, God," I cried,
"Why must this be so?
No disrespect, my Lord,
But I really want to know.
Each young soldier, Lord,
Is some mother's precious son.
Here, his rest is not easy
Until the battle's won.

Some, before the day is done,
Will, in a real grave, sleep;
Not time to pray a prayer
Like 'and my soul to keep'.
There, amid the much and mire,
Take what respite that they can.
God bless them and keep them safe,
Every single soldier, woman or man.
Maybe there is no rest for me, tonight.
But, Lord, that's just fine with me.
Why should I sleep in peaceful slumber
'til they come home safe and free?

I'll rest a little better, Lord,
When I know they can, too.
I place them in your hands, my Lord.
I surrender them all to you.
Take them under your wings,
Dear Lord (I seek for them in prayer),
As in shallow holes they rest
Until it's over, over there."

And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday: thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning. And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety. Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
