The Examination
In the fire of God's examination I stood.
The voice by the throne began to read my deeds,
As I stood there absolutely defenseless.
The voice who spoke said, "How do you plead?"
I stood trembling before the seat...
Of that One who sat to judge, to sentence me;
To whatever He thought right and just.
I thought silently, "Wait. I have a plea."
As I opened my mouth to speak to that Great Judge,
Who sat on that beautiful but awesome throne,
The voice said again, "Man, how do you plead?"
Said I, "Guilty, Sir ~ I have no merit of my own."
But as the One on the throne opened His mouth,
There stepped out Another. "A moment," said He.
His eyes were flashing, His white hair gleaming.
He said, "Great Judge, wait ~ He belongs to me!"
"I purchased this man with my blood one day,
As I hung there on a cross at Calvary.
I suffered alone there on that rocky hill.
I covered his sin and set him free."
Yes, my Son, said the Great Judge that day.
I looked for his sin, but in vain;
Because, as I looked at this man's record,
I couldn't see his sin for the stain.
There was, upon the record of his sin,
Such a stain that I could not see;
'Though I looked for a long time.
Your blood covered his sin. Set him free!"
