Set This Day

Set this day aside for remembering
Reflections of things already in my mind,
Of other days and simpler ways,
And loving thoughts of another time.
We can't go there, except to say
The thoughts we have of them,
Who loved and cared and acted
More, than this, our yearly whim ...

The souls who fought for freedom's way,
So far displaced from home;
The victims, falling by the side
Of harms way - all alone ...
The loved ones who have taught so much,
Send down their traits by genes;
So personal, so cherished, and
In our children now are seen ...

For those who fell by 'calling'
To a lost world needing love,
Who gave their last full measure
To bring that Name beloved.
To little ones who never saw
The sunlight of one day
And have no marker, nor even mound,
To say they've gone away ...

And, all the while, remembering
They all were once as I
And hope there's someone willing
To mourn me when I die.

Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father,
As we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Please hold our service men and women in your strong arms. Cover them with your sheltering grace and presence as they stand in the gap for our protection.
We also remember the families of our troops, and ask for your unique blessings to fill their homes and your peace, provision and strength to fill their lives.
May the members of our armed forces be filled with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters feel our love and support.
In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Scripture
And so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name: Then hear thou their prayer and their supplication in heaven thy dwelling place, and maintain their cause, And forgive thy people that have sinned against thee, and all their transgressions wherein they have transgressed against thee, and give them compassion before them who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them:
