Everyone (like me) was just counting down the clock for the next Command & Conquer game Generals. But I have been reading that some/alot of C&C fans are disappointed that EA pacific has taken over Westwood studios. I kinda am too because they should finish the story of C&C before they go off and make a totally new game. It would have been a smash hit if they were to finish Tiberium Twilight with the new SAGE engine, Better gameplay etc etc. But they didn't and instead we are left waiting again for Tiberium Twilight. But that does not mean I am dismissing Generals as a bad game. The game rocks! The new SAGE engine is a huge jump for C&C franchise and it is waay better than the old Nentendo engine that they had placed in the past few games. But more on the graphics later in the review. Alot has changed with this game. For example the command bar is no longer on the right hand side of the screen. They have now placed it the traditional way of the bottom of the screen. Wich I don't think makes much of a diffrince but you can decide that on your own. The way of constructing buildings has also changed alot. Instead of buildings popping out of nowhere, you have to get a contruction dozer/worker to slowley but surley build it up to perfection. And the biggest change is the graphics. They are by far the best I have ever seen in an RTS game and im betting many people agree with me. One of my favorite sequinces in the game is when a Rocket Buggy destroys a dam sending a tidal wave rushing water destroying everything in it's path. All oh so incredibly well animated. That's not the only well animated thing in the game. Like units for example. The turrets on a tank turn slowley not like in past C&C games where they whipped around as if they were a propeller. And I like the detail on the soldiers too. Occaisanaly you will see a soldier bend down to tie his shoe or a Rebel in the back of the Technical banging on his gun trying to make it work. (lol) Another thing new is now you have to click on the building in order to build the certin things that the building has to offer up. (For example: if you wanted to build a Crusader Tank you would have to click on the Weapons factory to do so) This has changed the ond fashond way of everything on one screen. I don't like this change very much because in the old way if you are attacking a base and need assistance fast you can just click on the screen to the right and get building fast. With generals you have to un-select your attackers and either press a hotkey or worse yet go back to base and build it all. The way of capturing buildings has also changed alot. No more engineers you can forget about that. Instead you need the chineese hero Black Lotus or a Ranger, Red Gaurd or Rebel with the Capture Building upgrade. Also forget about capturing the building in a fraction of a second. Instead it's a long and enduring process unless you have Black Lotus it only takes a few seconds Wich I like better I think it's more realistic than capturing it in a split second. But everything is not perfect. The AI is dumber than a stump sometimes. For example: Lets say you have 3 tanks. 1 of those tanks starts getting attacked and is now fighting for his dear sweet life. Now you expect the other 2 tanks to do somthing about it right? Nope, they just sit there like nothing is happening. The only time they would attack is when either the enemy is in range or they are getting attacked. Also sometimes they don't follow orders. Like this one time I was being attacked by GLA forces when I ordered my chommanche gunship to attack this Scorpien tank. He went over and started shooting his chaingun at it but a few seconds later he stopped attacking the tank and switched over to another target and started attacking! I tell him again to attack the other tank and he just does the same thing. Turns to attack the other tank but a few chaingun bullets later he switches to the other target again! This happens again and again until I order my tank to destroy the Scorpien tank once and for all. And the campaign is not all that great either. The USA campaign is not challenging at all. Even on Hard & Brutal. Same with the Chineese campaign except the last mission wich I think is a very tough mission. Even on normal it is a toughie. But I have not been able to play the GLA campaign yet because i'm too tied up in the multiplayer goodness! I don't know why other reviews trash Generals for the multiplayer being so laggy. I think it's fine! And if it is a little laggy so what? a little lag is not gonna hurt you! Besides you will be too wrapped up in all the multiplayer action to even notice the lag! Other reviewers can say what they wanna say I think multiplayer is a blast. And the sound is not too bad either. Sure there's some glitches in the sound like sometimes the sound plays a little late when a tank fires but it is nothing to confince you not to buy the game! I think the sound is cool and blends perfectly with everything it is suppost to sound like. The unit voices however can get annoying. Like when the USA paladin tank says "Protecting our people" People?! I think somthing like "Protecting our country" would be alot better. Also the lowness of the overlord tank's voice can get really annoying after awhile. But I think the music ROCKS! I LOVE the music because it just gets you so pumped up and ready to kick some butt! especally the USA music it's my favorite. Yes people are a little angrey that EA pacific has taken over Westwood and that they made Generals instead of Tiberium Twilight, and yes Generals has some problems but people can say whatever They please. This is one happy customer!
FINAL VERDICT: 94% HIGHS: Outstanding graphics, Great music, Stunning animation, Awsome detail. LOWS: Dumb AI, Stale campaign, Sound can mess up at times. BOTTOM LINE: To a C&C fan, to an RTS fan or just anyone! this is a very good buy.
Krazyman.
