After 3 loooong years, SOE (Sony Online Entertainment) finally releases the game that has been dubbed "A game that will change the way of gaming" And it probably will. Being the very first popular MMFPS (Massivley multiplayer first person shooter) on the market today. But, you must ask yourself: Is it really worth my $50? Is it really worth that hefty 13 dollars a month? This review might change your opinon. PlanetSide first had a public beta that everyone tried and liked. It was a smash hit and people by the thousands were logging in and gearing up. As beta progressed, the game got better and better. Bugs were fixed, new features were added and so on. But then came time to release and here's where Sony made a mistake. People were still complaining about bugs and crashes that Sony was completley aware of. They just released it way too early. But dispite all the complaining I thought i'd give it a try. I create a account and start playing and boy...This game...Wow. Bugs and crashes aside for abit. This game was amazing. I "Instant Action" to a "Continent" called Amerish. The second I spawn, all I can see is bullets blazing across my face. Hundreds mabye even thousands of little green dots on my radar. When I finally get outside of my tower after a gruling and exciting firefight I look outside and there it was: Guns blazing left and right. So many gunships in the air it practicley blocks out the sun. Tanks, MAXes, Infantry, infiltrators, everything you could imagine all swirled into what looks like a giant hornets nest of teammate and enemy troops. And that was just 1 battle! The game just kept getting better then ever once I started gaining battle ranks and more skills thrown my way. Lerking around invisible was execptionally fun. You just can't explain the feeling of crawling up to a sniper perched on a hill and silentley taking him out with a knife..Makes me want to go and play right now! But, like I mentioned before. The bugs started hitting me. "Stuck doors" bug, crashes, more bugs, lag, hardlocks and more. All of these issues were there during beta. People were talking about it and SOE refused to say a word and realeased it anyway. Full of these problems. When it was first released, when SOE got enough money they started adressing issues. Sorta. New patches came out with bug fixes and new features. But with bug fixes comes...More bugs. For example: SOE said, "We've come up with a patch that will fix some crashes" It did but a new Crash To Desktop bug was thrown in the mix. A few weeks later they claimed they fixed it. Again, fixed but with added bugs. It just goes on like this. The worst problem is many people with routers have this bug where after 10-20 minutes it just totally crashes. The worst part about after many, many bug reports SOE hasen't even said a word about it. It's like they disgaurded it as a minor bug. Wich it wasen't. And PlanetSide kinda gets repeatitive after a bit. Just going in and capturing bases and about 30-60 minutes later losing it. Kinda gets boring after awhile. Also, PlanetSide has very high system requirements. But you probably know why looking at the pics to your right. And if you have a 56K forget about it. People with 56Ks have been forced to cancel their accounts because of the lag. Also you will need lots and lots of RAM. 512 to the least. But if you surpass the requirements it pays off. The scenery in PlanetSide is absolutley amazing. When high in the air looking down at, say. Amerish it looks so real. On the ground it pays of too. If your computer is beefy enough to turn on foliage it pays off. The foliage looks so real its amazing. Makes for some really cool pics of mabye your squad or somthing. Speaking of squads why don't I talk about outfits. Outfits are basicley clans that are easier to understand. Outfits are always cool because you can organise attacks with hundreds of people. Wich makes for some explosive battles. PlanetSide seems to keep adding great new features. Like just a few weeks ago they added the cool new Liberator Bomber. A fast, nimble bomber that can pummel a base. And the Skygaurd. A pilots worst nightmere. Able to shoot down anything that comes it's way. SOE also claims to be adding many, many more features in the coming weeks. Stuff like "Platoons" made up of about 30 people.. And "Scantuary strikes" When one empire has captured all 3 of another empire's home continents. The attacking empire will be able to strike their scantuary. If your wondering what a scantuary is. It's basicley a empires main continent. Where attacks, outfits, and squads are formed. Pretty much the most important that spacific empire's continent. If all of this makes no sense to you your not alone. PlanetSide has a pretty steep learning curve. Sure it's got training but it just doesn't teach you everything. I mean, anything goes in real life, right? Training doesn't teach you if your a invisible suit how to avoid infantry with the Darklight implant (ablity to see cloakers) or how to work well with your squad. Ghost recon-like players will feel right at home. However, people that are used to Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament 2003 will take a few weeks to learn. PlanetSide has lots of potential and SOE doesn't seem to be using it. I hope they will make some changes in the coming months like bug fixes, new features, a little more of a reason to fight for bases and so on. But until then I think i'll sit back and enjoy the ride. And edit this review when new features are added and/or bugs are fixed. Until then, I'm off to play a slightley buggy but extremeley fun game. And you should really consider doing the same.
FINAL VERDICT: 80% HIGHS: Huge battles, Fantastic artwork, Great teamwork. LOWS: Many bugs, Kinda gets repeatitive, Kinda pointless. BOTTON LINE: lag happy and bug-ridden, it's got huge potential that you should really consider getting a piece of.
