Chapter 2
Later that evening Damn, Shae, having finally stopped crying, sat up and threw a pillow at the alarm clock. We have to be at the rink for practice in 15 minutes. Are my eyes still red? Ummmm? How was I supposed to answer that? Will I get in trouble for saying yes? No. Then yes. Darn it, Shae muttered, Im going to go wash my face. I dont want everyone to know Ive been crying. She got up and walked into the washroom. Seconds later there came a knock. I stood and opened the door. Hey Steven! Hi, is Shae here? She wasnt in her room. He glanced around somewhat nervously. Yeah, I turned and called over my shoulder, Shae, Steves here. He wants to talk to you. An animal-like snarl came from the bathroom. It was followed by a flying hairbrush. What do you want? Shae demanded before throwing a bottle of shampoo at Steven, You slept with her and now you expect me to just forgive and forget? Another bottle of shampoo and a bottle of conditioner followed. It was beginning to dawn on my exactly what must have happened. The idiot stepped into the room just in time to duck a curling iron. Standing up, he was hit with a hair dryer and a container of some sort moisturizer. Evidently having run out of ammunition in the bathroom, Shae came out, eyes alighting when she saw her skates. I could practically hear the gears in her head turning. To throw or not to throw. They would hurt Steven The skates might get damaged. Too much of a risk. Then she saw her boots. I quickly moved away as first one and then the other hurtled into Steven. I never want to see you again. Leave me alone! She pushed him out of the room and slammed the door in his face. Evidently not knowing when to give up, he knocked once again. Calmly opening the door, I punched him in the face and he sank down to the ground. Shae and I grabbed what wed need and stepped over him on the way to practice. * * * Shaes POV Heading out of the locker room, I bumped into Vic. Could you do me a favour? Sure, anything! Vic agreed without thinking. Ill hold Steven. You punch. I was smiling fully now. I guess youre alright then. Now, what would all of our adoring fans think? Vic, cautioned, eyes dancing with barely suppressed mirth. Okay, you hold him and ILL punch! We stepped onto the ice. Steven showed up about halfway through and when Vic and I finished going over our free dance, he was standing at the other end of the rink, talking to Lucinda. Vic began stroking backwards, gaining more and more speed, a reckless grin on his face. CRASH!!! Vic just managed to catch himself before he hit the ice but his quarry was not quite as lucky. Steve slid across the ice, slammed into Lucinda, and they both fell to the ground in a heap. I surveyed the situation, and burst into a fit of giggles. Everyone turned to look at me not realizing that the collision had not been an accident. Sorry, I apologized, Jamie was just making really silly faces at me. Jamie looked confused for a moment, but caught on after I sent her a pointed look. I was making faces, she agreed, Im sorry. Dave was watching her strangely, so she gave him her best puppy dog eyes, willing him to be quiet. Evidently wondering why she had been making faces, Jamie skated over to me and caught my gaze. Since I was involved in your alibi, I feel I deserve an explanation. Seeing that she was right, I quickly summed up that afternoons revelation. Jamies expression went from shock to outrage as the story unfolded. Im very glad Vic ran into him! She stated wholeheartedly, I just wish that I was big enough to do the same. As it is, I dont think hed notice if I skated into him. She paused, and her face developed a diabolical expression. Suspicious, I questioned her. What is that look for? Tell me what you are going to do! Without answering me, Jamie skated over to David. I looked on nervously as Jamie stood on her tiptoes and whispered into Daves ear. Dave quickly became infuriated. I realized what was going to happen when Dave began to do some crossovers, as if preparing for a jump. CRASH!! Oops, how clumsy of me. Im so sorry Steve. Sarcasm was evident in David's voice and Elvis, who was standing nearby, looked over curiously. David began to skate back over to where Jamie and I were laughing hysterically. There. I knocked him over! Elvis having somehow materialized next to me, had no idea why Dave would want to knock Steve over. What are you people up to? What did Steven do? He was cheating on Shae, Jamie replied quietly, with Lucinda! Oh, you were right to hurt him then. Do you mind if I have a shot? Not at all! I graciously allowed. * * *
