Chapter 2
Victors POV: Representing CanadaPlease welcome Shae- Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz! I glanced over at Shae. She grinned back at me and nodded her head confidently. If you asked anyone to describe Shae-Lynn, I would bet anything that they would say she was confident. That was true. When it came to being on the ice, there was no one more sure of themselves, no one more confident than her. She owned the ice and she knew how to sell a program. I considered myself so lucky to be skating with someone who possessed that quality. On the inside, though, I knew that Shae-Lynn was a very vulnerable person. She wore this hard exterior for everyone elseshe even tries to use it on me sometimes, but I always see right through it... -Flashback- Winter, 1998 Shae? I asked pounding on the door. Shae-Lynnplease open the door, its me, I heard sniffing on the other side. I didnt understand what had happened. In all the years that we have skated together, never once had Shae-Lynn missed a practice. She dragged herself to the ice when she had the flu, bronchitis, coldsyou name it. Even with her injured knee, she was sitting in the penalty box with a blanket wrapped around her watching me skate and giving me pointers on what to do. For her not to show up at a practice shocked me.scared me. I didnt know if she was okif she was hurt. That was one of the few times in my life I was scared out of my mind. Just not knowing where she was... Slowly, the door opened, revealing a disheveled looking Shae. Her eyes were red and puffy from crying, she was still in her pajamas, and she looked absolutely miserable. I had never seen her so upset in all the years I knew her. ImIm sorry I wasntat practice, she choked out. Ijust She broke down and her body was wracked with sobs. I didnt know what to think. Shae-Lynn, its ok I replied moving into the apartment and taking her tightly into my arms. I slowly moved her to the couch and sat us down. We sat there in silence as I rubbed her back gently, trying to calm her down. I pulled away gently and looked into her sad eyes. You want to tell me what happened? I asked, smoothing her hair away from her face. She glanced down at her lap. If you dont feel comfortable, you dont have to No, she said abruptly, looking up at me. I want to tell youI need to, She took a deep breath. Um, welllast nightI went to visit Steven. He didnt know I was dropping in but I figured, Id surprise him and make a quick romantic dinner and then, we could just be together and everything I nodded, trying to encourage her to go on. So, I went out, bought all the stuff for dinner, and let myself in from the spare key he hides outside his door. So I let myself in, and put the stuff down on the counter and looked around to find him. Then I heard it. I heard him laughing so I figured, he was on the phone so I went to find him to wave hello. I followed the sound of his voice to his bedroom and went to open the door.andI, she started to tear up again. I squeezed her hand to try to calm her down. I heard another voice. A womans voice Oh Shae I said softly, realizing what she was getting at. She started to break down again. You dont have to say any more, Yes I do, She insisted, her eyes showing the hurt and fury she was feeling at the moment. I nodded to allow her to continue. So I willed myself to open the door and found themin theretogether. I actually didnt even say anything. I just stood there shocked and angrywaiting for one of them to look up. He looked up first. And he was all, Shaewaitit isnt what it looks like,. I blew up, Victor. I trusted him. I was here, in Lake Placid, with tons of attractive men and I never once thought of something like that. The first woman he sees, heII.I shouldnt be so upset. I realized that Steven wasnt the man I thought he was. Vic, why am I so upset? She began sobbing once more. Come here, Shae-Lynn, I said, holding my arms open. She crawled into them and buried her head in my chest, crying her eyes out. I rested my head on top of hers and took a deep breath in, trying to compose my thoughts. The soft, flowery smell of her shampoo wafted to my nose and I was shocked to feel my heart rate quicken. I had never felt this way about Shae-Lynn before. I shouldnt feel this way now. Shae, I began trying to think of whatever would make her feel better. You have a right to be upset. He hurt you. He took advantage of you. And you know whatyoure better than him, Right, she scoffed. Its true, I said, lifting her head to look into her large brown eyes. You dont even realize how amazing you are, do you? Youre smart, youre sweet, youre funny as all hell.no one can do a better Victor Kraatz imitation than you, she laughed softly. Youre the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes on. I said sincerely. A small smile grew across her face. Really? she asked quietly. Really, I swore. I would kill to be with.a woman like you,. I had to stop myself before saying I would kill you be WITH YOU. I knew right then and there, no matter how wrong I thought it wasno matter how impractical, how silly it seemedI was in love with Shae-Lynn. It didn't make sense. It scared the hell out of me and excited me to no end...all at the same time. She smiled at me, her tears slowing. I love you Vic, she said with a laugh, giving me a tight hug. I love you too, -End Flashback- That was when I knew...no doubt I was absolutely in love with her. I had always been attracted to Shae-Lynn and always had a good time with her but I never realized how deep my feeling ran until then. I looked at it as something that would never happen though. I knew Shae didn't feel the same way and it would be a waste to tell her and ruin an already great realtionship. I began dating Maikki and convinced myself I was really in love with her. I even went so far as to ask her to marry me...but we began to fight more and we were both too unhappy. I had to end things...and I did. And that basically leads me to right here and now...alone and getting ready to skate. Shae-Lynn tugged my arm a little and we skated to center ice. Hitting our beginning pose, I caught Shae-Lynns gaze. She smiled broadly at me. The music started and we began to move our bodies. We had to skate.
