Chapter 5
~Shae-Lynns POV~ Three days after Shania returned from her sojourn Elvis arrived on my doorstep soon after six oclock, just as the sun was setting, looking strangely nervous. He looked very handsome in dark blue jeans and his usual black leather jacket. Can I ask you a huge favour? He blurted as soon as we were sitting on the couch. You can ask me anything. I wont promise to say yes though. I responded suspiciously. I mean, there had to be a reason why he was so nervous about asking me! Elvis reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. This couldnt be what it looked like, could it? I didnt want to get my hopes up, after all, the year before Id told Elvis I didnt want to get married. But if this was what I thought *** ~Elviss POV~ I looked over at Shae. She was beautiful even wearing faded jeans and a baggy navy blue T-shirt. Her hair was falling out of its ponytail and it framed her face with blonde wisps. Her brown eyes shone as brightly as any stars and a smile was ghosting over her lips. I pulled the box out of my pocket and, getting down on one knee, I flipped the lid up. I prepared to ask what was probably the most important question of my life (at least up to that point) and I was very nervous. Shae do you think that you could wear this for me? I said nonchalantly. Well, She replied, trying to look serious, How long do you need it worn for? I was thinking 40 or 50 years. What do you think? Definitely more than 40! She admonished me. Her smile was genuine now and it lit up her entire face. How I loved that smile! I leaned in and captured her lips in a passionate kiss. By the time we broke apart the clock read 6:45 and I was starting to get hungry. Do you want to go out for supper? Shae asked me, echoing my own thoughts. Where will we leave Shania? I questioned in return. She had come home yesterday to spend the week with Shae. After that we were shipping her off to her other grandmothers for two weeks. Mrs. Chandler, the old lady next door lives all by herself and Im sure that she would love to take Shania for a couple of hours, She smiled, Im going to go change OK? Fine. Do you want me to call your neighbour? She doesnt know you, so I might as well call myself and then we can drop Shania off there on the way out. Shae quickly made the call and, she was right, the lady said that shed take Shania. When my fianc came out of her bedroom I stopped and stared. She was wearing black pants and formfitting red top. Her hair was piled on her head with a few ringlets left loose to frame her face. She was stunning! Shae chose a seafood place just a 15-minute drive from the house. We headed out the door, me carrying Shania and Shae carrying her stuff. I rang the doorbell of the neigbours house and a smiling, gray-haired lady opened the door. Whos the boy, Shae? The old lady wanted to know. Its a secret. Can you keep a secret? Not at all, I thought to myself as the neigbour nodded, Well, you might have heard of him. His name is Elvis. Elvis Stojko? Mrs. Chandler breathed, clearly in awe. Yes, pleased to meet you! I interjected. Hes my fianc, Shae excitedly informed her the old lady, And Shanias father. The old lady looked startled at this piece of news. We left then, before Shae could give the woman any more information to gossip. Arriving at the restaurant, we sat down at a quiet table for two in a corner. Glancing at the menu, I ordered a lobster, whereas Shae decided to go with the garlic shrimp. The meal was delicious. After wed paid the bill, we went wondering around the block, leaving the car where it was. For February, it wasnt particularly cold (not below 10 Celsius) and there was very little wind. We came across an outdoor skating rink, which, apart from two other couples, was deserted. Ive never seen this rink before! Exclaimed Shae, obviously amazed. Do you want to skate? Id love to! Shae replied smiling. *** ~Shae-Lynns POV~ Elvis went to rent a pair of skates while I jogged quickly back to where we had left my car. Parking it closer to the rink, I reached into the trunk and grabbed my skates. Five minutes later we were out on the ice. The other two couples werent particularly good skaters so we were careful to avoid them. Tag! Elvis whispered in my ear before taking off. Well he wasnt going to get away with that. No way! I chased after him. We flitted around the ice gaining speed. Finally I caught Elvis. Wrapping my arms around his neck I whispered, Now whos it Bourne? Ill readily admit that it was childish, but it was the night of my engagement and I didnt feel much like being mature. Eventually I started teaching Elvis some hydroblading. His first attempts were hilarious, but he caught on quickly. He wasnt quite as graceful as Vic, but Vic and I had been doing these move for years. For a beginner he was amazing and could do just about everything I showed him. After wed exhausted dance, Elvis suggested we try a few pairs maneuvers. We tried side-by-side spins and I was startled to find that we were on time. Then we tried some death spirals. I hadnt done a death spiral in years and was surprised at how quickly it came back to me. We even went as far as to do some jumps. Elvis was much better at those. The other couples had stopped skating by this time and were watching us from the boards. Despite their stares I relaxed in Elviss arms. Id never loved skating by myself. I always felt safer and more comfortable when there was someone out on the ice with me that I could rely on. Our skating had calmed down and we were now gliding slowly around the ice. Elvis had his arm around me and I leaned my head on his shoulder. This was where I was meant to be. *** ~Elviss POV~ We realized that we were getting late to pick up Shania. I returned my skates and we hurried back to Shae-Lynns car. She hopped in on the drivers side and we headed home. I went to Mrs. Chandlers to pick up my daughter while Shae parked the car. I walked into the house juggling Shania and her bags of junk. Shae was in the kitchen making coffee. I placed Shania in her crib and sauntered back out to join Shae at the table. She was sitting in one of the wooden chairs with her mug in front of her and her head in her hands. Seating myself next to her, I picked up her coffee and took a huge gulp. This seemed to draw her out of her reverie. Hey! Thats mine! Was yours. I corrected smugly before finishing the remainder of the coffee. If youre going to be like that then Im going to bed. She stood up and walked to her room with me tagging along behind. When we reached her bedroom she turned and fixed me with an icy glare. You will be sleeping on the couch tonight. She told me. Why? I asked. Because you were mean. This is your punishment. And then she slammed the door in my face. This was sooo not fair. Knowing Shae, if I protested the situation shed send me back to the hotel, so I bit my tongue and stalked off to the couch, muttering to myself about the bitchiness of women. A couple of hours later, a noise caught my attention. I looked up and saw Shae standing in the doorway to the living room. She was wearing a pair of pajama pants and a loose t-shirt. Her hair was loose and hung down her back in a tousled mass. Youre forgiven now. Are you gonna come to bed? she asked softly. I didnt even consider saying no. I stood up and crossed the room quickly, sealing our lips together in a kiss. When we broke apart she grinned at me. Taking my hand in her own, my fianc led me back to the bedroom. *** ~Shae-Lynns POV (2 hours later)~ Rolling over in bed, I tried to snuggle in closer to Elvis. Ever accommodating, he lifted his arms and pulled me in closer. Youre still awake? I asked, surprised. Yeah, I couldnt sleep. Me neither. Well then why are we just lying here? Im sure there are some much more interesting things we could be doing. Such as? I inquired raising my eyebrow archly. Without wasting any words he pulled me into a fierce kiss. *** ~Shae-Lynns POV~ I walked into practice with a huge grin on my face. I hadnt been able to stop smiling since I woke up in Elviss arms and it dawned on me that I was going to be spending the rest of my life with him. It was a nice thought! Good morning Tatiana, Nikolai, Vic! Whats put you in such a cheerful mood? Tatiana demanded sourly. She never had been a morning person. Its spring. And Im getting married! I enthused. When did he propose? Vic inquired. Last night! I admitted, blushing slightly. God! I didnt know that Elvis was such a romantic! Exclaimed Vic. Youre going to marry Elvis Bourne? Nikolai interrupted. He seemed very upset about the prospect for some reason. Yeah. Blushing again. I blush way too easily. It really isnt fair. What about Shanias father? How does he feel about you getting married? Or have you not told him? questioned Tatiana. It was a good question. My coach didnt know who Shanias father was. He knows Elvis and I are getting married and hes delighted about the fact. Shanias father will be an even bigger part of her life now than he used to be. Vic, the kindhearted soul, took pity on poor, bemused Tatiana. Elvis is Shanias father. Shae-Lynns just bugging you. Sticking my tongue out at Vic, I skated off before something else happened. Circling the ice, I watched curiously when Nikolai stormed off the ice. What was his problem? Finally Vic and I got on with our practice. We only had one month left until Worlds so every moment on the ice was important.
