Chapter 1
~Elviss POV~ I was sitting morosely by the side of the skating rink. My last Canadian Nationals was over and the Exhibition finished. One more competition to go, the biggest one of them all, one of the only events that I've never won in my long career as a figure skater. Suddenly the door to the rink flew open. I looked up, startled. I had thought that everyone had already left. My teammate Shae-Lynn Bourne entered the arena. Shae and I had been really close friends ever since the '98 Olympics in Nagano, where our dreams had come crashing down. I had hurt my groin in practice and was fighting the pain throughout the singles competition. Shae on the other hand had been fighting the judges. She and her ice dance partner Kris had skated the performance of a lifetime in the Free Dance, only to be denied a medal by corrupt judges. I was startled out of my thoughts by her voice. "I forgot my gloves. Am I disturbing you?" "No, not at all," I responded, "I was just feeling sorry for myself." "You've been the Canadian champion for a long time Elvis, now let everyone see what a showboat you can be. Just because you're going pro doesn't really change anything. You'll still be skating. Thats what really matters. She was right. I knew that I could still skate. Besides, this way, youll have more time to tinker around with your precious car. Shae teased. I decided to ignore the comment and went back to considering my losses. Professional skating just wouldnt be the same as amateur and it was also hard to face up to the fact that I would no longer be attending the Canadians. "You can still come to the Canadians, Elvis. You just won't be under the stress of winning anymore." How could she have known what I was thinking? Sometimes Shae-Lynn creeped me out a little bit. "Have you eaten yet?" I inquired. "Not yet, I had a bite before the exhibition but that was at four o'clock. I'm starving." "I know a great restaurant just down the street. Would you like to get something to eat?" "Sure!" she replied. She even sounded somewhat excited about it. ~Shae-Lynn's POV~ We walked down the street. It was cold, but not as cold as a normal January evening in Hamilton, Ontario. The sky was clear and full of stars. There weren't many people on the sidewalk as we hurried towards the restaurant Elvis had picked out. Of all my teammates, Elvis Stojko was one of my favourites. He could always make me laugh. No matter how bleak the situation seemed. It wasnt a long walk to the restaurant, a cozy establishment down the street from the arena. We sat down a table for two in the corner and were handed our menus. Elvis ordered the special and I decided to get the same. We were in no rush and chatted away while eating. We covered numerous topics, most with no relevance to skating. It was late when we finally left the restaurant and the streets were completely deserted. We decided to take a shortcut back to the hotel. Turning off the street, we headed towards the park. The trees closed in around us and we continued chatting as we walked. Suddenly, Elvis slipped on a patch of ice. I grabbed his forearm to keep him from falling. Come on Elvis; youre a skater for crying out loud! Then I slipped. I should have held my tongue. Elvis put his arms around me to keep me on my feet. He didnt make any snide comments just held me until I had gotten my balance back. I turned in his grasp to thank him and, finding myself at a loss for words, kissed him lightly on the tip of the nose instead. Elvis leaned in slowly and kissed me back much more seriously! I wrapped my arms around his neck. The kiss continued for a nice long time. When we finally came up for air, I realized I was getting very cold. Elvis was blushing slightly so I laughed as we continued on towards the hotel. I was much warmer now as Elvis had his arm around my shoulders. I glanced up at him, he had suddenly become more attractive in my eyes. I had never thought of Elvis as cute before, but he was. Not in the classical sense of course, but there was something in his eyes and his smile made me weak in the knees. When we reached the door to my room, I paused, not wanting the night to end. Elvis leaned towards me and kissed me again, passionately. I returned the kiss just as eagerly, exploring his mouth with my tongue. Do you want to come in? I asked when we took a break. Do you want me to want to come in? Elvis teased back. I turned and opened the door. Facing Elvis once again, I nodded my head slightly. Yes, I said simply. * * * Elviss POV I rolled over in bed, careful not to disturb Shae. The sun was streaming through the window and it made Shaes tumbled blonde hair glisten like gold. I kissed her gently and she opened her eyes a crack, smiling. Rolling over she buried her head in the pillow and pulled the blanket over her head. Giving up on Shae, I glanced over at the clock and swore. It was 8:00 am and I was supposed to catch my plane at 8:30. I had to hurry. Slipping out of the bed I went into the bathroom and splashed some water on my face. Back in the bedroom, I searched around for the clothes I had scattered last night. Now fully clothed, I walked over to where Shae lay buried in bedclothes. Are you going to wake up enough to say goodbye? I asked. That got her attention. She sat up in bed and looked at me curiously. By way of explanation I said, I have a plane to catch. Oh, youre leaving already? Well, I have to get ready for the Olympics and I didnt think there would be any reason to stay in Hamilton after the competition had finished. Shae stood up and, wrapping the blanket around her, came over to me. Without further comment she kissed me softly on the lips. Ill miss you. Ill see you in Salt Lake though, right? she looked at me for conformation. Of course. Now I really do have to get going. Ok, bye. I kissed her again and walked out the door. * * *
