Discovering Purpose For Life
All of us are looking for purpose in life and have resident within us a desire to search for the truth about eternal things. God put it in us. It's that knowing, that shouting inaudible voice, continually declaring "there is more to life than this!" I want to share with you some brief pointers on discovering purpose for your life. They are really simple and can start you on an adventure that will satisfy the hunger within you like nothing else can.
LIFE IS MORE THAN A QUEST FOR SUBSTANCE AND STATUS.
Jesus said, "For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?" So often we make the mistake of thinking that all the things that we own and all the status that our things creates for us will provide relief for the hunger and thirst within us. They don't. Substance and status are mere placebos that grant some temporary emotional relief but they never provide a remedy for the aches and pains of not knowing the real purpose for the life we live.
GOD HAS A UNIQUE PURPOSE FOR YOUR LIFE.
Not only does He know who you are but He also has a purpose for your life! The Lord spoke through Jeremiah (29:11) and said, "I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil." The Lord hasn't changed His mind. He still desires the opportunity to work in the broken tangledness of our lives to restore them into objects of His personal handiwork.
SIN INTERFERES AND DISTORTS GOD'S PURPOSE IN OUR LIVES.
This is something that all of us have to own up to. Even though we live in a world where we are being taught that morals are no longer valid there is yet a higher court that still sets sentence for sin. Not only does sin have eternal consequences it also bears strongly on our reception of the blessing and revelation of God's purpose in our lives here on earth. Sin separates us from God. Isaiah 59:2 says, "But your iniquities (sins) have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear."
JESUS CHRIST IS GOD'S PROVISION FOR SIN.
God knows what we have need of and our greatest need, someone to shoulder the burden of our sin and assume the penalty for it, is provided for in Jesus Christ. When Jesus died on the Cross He provided a way for us receive a total reprieve from the High Court of the Universe! Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
LIFE BECOMES MEANINGFUL AND FULL OF PURPOSE.
Not only do we inherit the forgiveness of sin and eternal life in the sweet by and by but we also discover that life becomes meaningful and full of purpose in the nasty here and now. There are definite benefits in this present life afforded by our faith in God that nothing in this world can equal. In John 10:10 Jesus said "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." Everlasting life is our eternal need and abundant life is our present need and Jesus provides both.
Life can be more than just a journey. It can be a real ride all the way into eternity!
