AVOIDING THE DANGERS OF DARKNESS
A part of godliness is being faithful to God in all that we do. Faithfulness involves letting God and His Word be our exclusive source of any knowledge we have about Him, His ways, and spiritual reality.
If we are unfaithful by feeding our minds with sources other than God and His Word, we make our hearts and minds vulnerable to enslavement by spiritual powers of darkness.
In 1 Chronicles 9:1 we read where...
"All Israel was recorded by genealogies, and indeed, they were inscribed in the book of the kings of Israel. But Judah was carried away captive to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness."
What happened to Judah that left them vulnerable? They began to inquire of sources other than those of the Lord and to worship other gods.
Knowing that there is no other truth apart from God, that all else are deceptions and devices of the enemy used to steal, kill and destroy, we have to be careful lest we find ourselves bending our ear toward unhealthy and unwise sources of spiritual information.
Jesus said...
"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)
We can only conclude that any information or input we get from other than godly sources is based on a lie. If we allow ourselves to listen to lies long enough, we will eventually begin to believe them. This also holds true where false doctrines are held and taught as truth in the church.
To remain free of spiritual deception, we must never seek spiritual information or insight from any source other than the Holy Spirit or Christ-centered counselors. Failure to follow God's guidelines can create serious problems in our lives and result in forfeiture of eternal blessings.
1 Chronicles 10:13 tells us...
"Saul (king of Israel) died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance."
Witchcraft and eastern mystic religions are experiencing a horrific degree of revival in our time. Followers of Jesus Christ have absolutely no business mingling the profane with the holy! Consulting mediums (psychics and others who operate by spirits other than the Holy Spirit) is a practice forbidden by God.
Leviticus 19:31 tells us...
"Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God."
and
Leviticus 20:27 says...
"A man or a woman who is a medium, or who has familiar spirits, shall surely be put to death; they shall stone them with stones. Their blood shall be upon them."
No matter how popular or innocent it may seem, Godly people should avoid all contact with the occult. We renew and protect our minds by reading, memorizing and meditating on the Word of God. If we judge all we see and hear by His Word, we will not be so anxious to be deceived and drawn into the dark things of this world that serve only to destroy us.
